  Guelph Mercury - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Guelph Mercury is an English language newspaper published in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
The newspaper was founded in 1854 as the Guelph Advertiser and published weekly by owner George Keeling.
In 1862, Toronto newspaperman James Innes took over the editorship of the Advertiser and shortly thereafter formed a partnership with John McLagan, owner of the competing weekly newspaper the Guelph Mercury.

Advertisements and commercials are usually seen in a fleeting light, here today and gone tomorrow before the public grows weary of them.
Donna Andrew, Department of History, is analysing advertisements in Britain’s premier eighteenth-century newspaper, the Daily Advertiser, to demonstrate her belief that commercial ads (those directed at selling goods) have tended to replace communicative ads – ads that send a message to the audience – right through to today.
She says that many advertisements in the eighteenth-century were not what we consider ads today: they belonged more to the communicative or message category.

In 1827, Galt felled a large maple tree to found the town of Guelph, but by 1832, he had been recalled to the United Kingdom and was trying to publish another book to stay ahead of his creditors.

Guelph’s transformation from a backwoods village of some seven hundred residents in 1843 to a bustling commercial and industrial town fifteen years later was the result of good fortune and a concerted effort by the people of Guelph to make their town the centre of com­merce in Wellington District.
Economic development was greatly aided between 1843 and 1856 by the settlement of the area north of Guelph.

The Guelph Mercury and Advertiser was purchased by his nephew, James Innes McIntosh, and Francis W. Galbraith in 1898, at which time Innes was reportedly the oldest active journalist in Ontario.
A member of the Guelph Board of Trade, he was an incorporator in 1884 of the Guelph Junction Railway along with John Belmer Armstrong*, Charles Raymond, and others.
He served as well as a founding director of the Guelph and Ontario Investment and Savings Society and the Guelph Light and Power Company; in 1898 he was president of the Dominion Life Assurance Company.
