The Guelph Platers were a junior ice hockey in the Ontario Hockey Association from 1975 to 1982, and the Ontario Hockey League from 1982 to 1989, based in Guelph, Ontario.
In the 1980-81 season, the Platers reached the Tier II championship for southern Ontario, but were defeated by another future OHL team, the Belleville Bulls.
Guelph finished first in the round-robin and took a bye to the finals, where they would play the Hull Olympiques of the QMJHL for the championship.

In 1982, the Sharocks were bought by Joe Holody and moved to Guelph to become the farm team to the Guelph Platers.
The team has since changed its name to the Fire and then the Dominators, but had kept the "Platers" moniker until 1996, despite their parent club moving and stranding them to become the Owen Sound Platers in 1989.
The team originated in the Central Junior C Hockey League and moved to the Western Junior C Hockey League.

The Guelph Memorial Gardens was built in 1948 and hosted various hockey teams over the years, including the Guelph Biltmore Mad Hatters, Guelph Platers and Guelph Storm.
The Gardens occupied prime land in downtown Guelph and City Hall, which is next door, tore down the arena in 2006 to use the land for municipal offices.
In Guelph, one of the conditions of the construction of the GSEC was that the Gardens would close so as not to compete against the new arena for concerts and special events.

Jacques Martin was the coach of the Platers who after joining the Ontario Hockey League in 1982 had qualified for the playoffs for the first time after missing in each of their first three seasons in the league.
At the conclusion of the six game round robin tournament the Platers and Hull were tied with a record of two wins and one loss but Guelph advanced to the final as a result of posting a 3-1 win over the Olympiques in the round robin tournament.
In the final game the Platers took advantage of two goals in eleven seconds by Luciano Fagioli in the first period and goals from Mike Murray and Al MacIssac thirteen seconds apart in the second period to record a 5-2 win to capture Memorial Cup.

Because he was underage, junior rules stipulated Muller had to enter the official junior draft and was taken by the Guelph Platers where he continued his excellent offensive play, notching 52 goals and 112 points in 62 games.
In 1983-84, the 18-year-old Muller was again having a sensational offensive year with the Platers in the Ontario Hockey League, and finished with 94 points despite playing in just 49 games.
Although Muller still had two years of junior eligibility remaining, it was clear to the Guelph Platers that they were not going to have their star captain back in the lineup.
