Guemes Island is one of the least known of the inhabited San Juan Islands, a great place to go if you are, say, a fugitive from technology or want to isolate yourself from the race-pace of civilization.
Guemes (pronounced GWEE-muhs or GWEY-muhs) is not San Juan Island, it is not Orcas Island, it is not a Rosario or a Roche Harbor, and it hasn't yet been bought stem to stern by some software gazillionaire.
Guemes also is an excellent venue for what some consider an underrated activity: doing absolutely nothing.

Guemes Island is a small island in Puget Sound, located north of the City of Anacortes in the western part of Skagit County, Washington.
The southeastern part of the island is hilly and composed of bedrock and fractured rock; the remainder is gently rolling and overlain by glacial drift.
The aquifer system underlying the island is considered to be vulnerable to contamination due to the highly heterogeneous nature of the sand and gravels making up the aquifers, and the inconsistent confining nature of the surficial confining unit and the Whidbey confining unit.

Guemes Island had been warned that it would be some time before the county would have the funds to address Guemes Island’s issues, but the community felt development pressures on the eight-square-mile island with incredible coastline views were calling for a more immediate response.
Harvesting that passion for the island’s rural nature set the agenda for Wednesday, as about 60 of the island’s 800 residents in five roundtables began sifting through their opinions and preferences, and sorting them into a concrete set of proposals for preserving their island way of life.
And recently, the county informed the island that it won’t have the funds to support the island’s “sub-area planning” process as part of the county’s new comprehensive land-use plan for the foreseeable future.

Guemes Island in far northwestern Washington State is the kind of place where people stop in the roadway to chat with a neighbor from the other side of the island they haven’t seen for a week or so.
Steve Cox, the county’s director of the Guemes Island Ferry, had declined to meet with the SDAT team during their scoping visit in the spring because he was so weary of the conflict with the islanders.
But for the SDAT charrette, county officials, including Cox, returned to the island, and were impressed enough to not only pledge to come back to the table to talk over the issues, but also to ask for SDAT help with other sub-area plans within the county.
