The Guiana Shield is that portion of South American tropical forest that covers much of Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana, as well as eastern and southern Venezuela, and northeast Brazil.
These features mean that Guiana Shield frontier forest ecosystems represent one of the highest per capita forested areas in the world and one of the largest well preserved landscapes.
The challenge for Guiana Shield countries is to develop management approaches, within human and financial resource constraints, that can capture the full range of forest values and consequently reduce the threats to these values.

Guiana (or the Guiana Shield) (Spanish: Guayana) forms a portion of the northern coast of South America.
The highlands of the Shield are largely located in south eastern Venezuela, and are partly protected by the Canaima National Park (VE) and the Kaieteur National Park (GY).
In geological terms the Guiana Shield is a granitic formation overlaid with sandstone, quartzite, shales, conglomerates and boulder beds.

This unique ecoregion stretches from the State of Amapá in Brazil, through French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, the Venezuelan States of Bolivar and Amazonas, large parts of the Colombian Amazon, as well as the ecologically associated areas in the Brazilian States of Pará, Roraima and Amazonas.
A leading objective of the Guiana Shield Initiative is to develop a financial mechanism which will ensure that the ecological integrity of the region can be maintained by equitably compensating local ecosystem managers and environmentally responsible businesses for the environmental goods and services they deliver.

This paper was prepared for an informal donor co-ordination meeting held in November 1998 which aimed to review current conservation and management strategies in the Guiana shield region and considered prospects for future donor action.
As one of the few unfragmented blocks of tropical forest on earth, the Guiana Shield forest is a unique resource.
Its preservation so far has been the result of low-potential rainforest soils, limiting both population pressure and (until recently) interest from logging companies in forest where most trees are of small stature and diameter, where the few valuable species are found at low densities and where extraction costs are high.
