The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
"Guide" isn't a laugh-out-loud experience as much as it is a witty film, packed with references and satire.
Yet, this is the first time the "Guide" has been brought to the narrow confines of the silver screen, which gives it money to expand Adams's limitless universe; but the adventures taken must be chosen carefully, due to its limited running time and newcomer patience.
The performances all around are delightful, and they save the film when it threatens to cave in under all the weight of story and pretension.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is an always digestible and meekly enjoyable popcorn movie that survives entirely off the strength of its source material.
The establishing minutes of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy utilize its smartest juxtaposition, a shrewd literal simile: Arthur Dent's (Martin Freeman) cosy little house is scheduled to be demolished in order to make way for a new freeway bypass, moments before the Earth itself is demolished for a similar, albeit more intergalactic purpose.

Hitchhiker was the Number 1 film in the UK last weekend (and I think the US too?).
It’s not even a good film if viewed as an original work: the characters are unsympathetic, the cast exhibit no chemistry, the direction is pedestrian, the pace plodding, the special effects overpowering (lots and lots of special effects, none of them funny mind you) and above all the script is amazingly, mindbogglingly awful.

This film was called, The HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy.
All in all, I felt this to be a very successful film, classic, funny, witty, a proud edition to the Hitchhikers Saga in its own right, Douglas Adams would have been proud, and there are obvious openings for a sequel.

Visually the film is spot on, making use of the clarity and potential of modern CGI effects without losing that very humerous, tackyness that has always characterised Hitchhikers.
Having said all that, though, Douglas Adams himself said that the main problem with The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy was that it lacked a love-story to drive the plot along.
Rant over, REAL problem with the film was that the book contained too many ideas for the running time and as a result the HHGTTG itself kind of got more sidelined than I wold have expected.
