GuideStar UK is committed to an ongoing programme of consultation to help to deepen our understanding of our users' expectations and to discuss a range of strategic and technical issues relating to the implementation of the project.

GuideStar UK is building a website through which the public will have free access to a database of high quality information on UK charities.
GuideStar UK is developing a new classification system to help classify charities according to their beneficiaries and activities, which will be linked to the search engine.
Sample GuideStar UK web pages for a charity will be available on www.guidestar.org.uk from late June 2004 to illustrate the kind of information that will be displayed.

 GuideStar defends report - PittsburghLIVE.com
GuideStar, a national nonprofit research organization, defended its methods Friday, saying that it did not unfairly inflate the salary of Passavant Memorial Homes chief Rick D. Senft.
GuideStar calculated that the average salary for someone in Senft’s position is $80,097, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Wednesday.
GuideStar uses nonprofits’ mandatory IRS filings, called 990 forms, which are public documents, to create its Compensation Report.

 Sabo recognized for role in Guidestar
Representative Martin Sabo was honored by board members of Minnesota Guidestar, the state's intelligent transportation systems (ITS) program, on February 23 for his crucial role in garnering federal funds for the program.
Guidestar monies also provided seed funding for intelligent vehicle research, created intellectual capital through the education of more than 100 graduate students, and funded outreach and technology transfer efforts.

 Checking on charities to become easier / State attorney general's office signs contract to update Web site
Guidestar, which is formally incorporated as Philanthropic Research Inc. and based in Williamsburg, Va., already provides a similar service for charity regulators in New Mexico.
Guidestar, however, plans to post the forms for all charities based in California that file with the IRS, plus other groups (mainly nonprofit advocacy groups, such as the American Civil Liberties Union) that are also required to register with Lockyer's office.
Guidestar said it then takes an additional three months for it to receive scanned copies of the forms from the IRS and to post them on the Internet.

 PND News - Foundations Pledge $11.5 Million to GuideStar
GuideStar — the operating name of Williamsburg, Virginia-based Philanthropic Research, Inc. — has collected basic program and financial data for some 850,000 nonprofits that are recognized as having 501(c)(3) status by the Internal Revenue Service.
The GuideStar database also includes more than 730,000 digitized 990 forms, the financial returns that nonprofits are required to file with the IRS.
The foundations that have joined forces to fund the operations of GuideStar include Atlantic Philanthropies, the Ford Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Lilly Endowment, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the Surdna Foundation.

The numerical > fields in the GuideStar database are captured accurately at the 99.9 > percent level.
It may be that the charities you're looking into are ones without sufficient revenue to require filing a 990, are too new to have a 990 online yet, or may not have a 990 filed or online for other reasons.
Remember, any nonprofit that is required to file a 990 is also required to disclose that 990 to you on request and to provide a copy to you for only the reasonable costs of duplication (photocopying).

Williamsburg, Va.-A new survey by GuideStar, indicates that contributions to most nonprofits decreased or remained flat in January-October 2002 compared to donations during the same period in 2001.
GuideStar e-mailed 32,960 messages inviting individuals at public charities and private foundations to participate in the survey; the response rate was 8 percent, with 2,725 people taking the survey on-line between November 7 and 21, 2002.

At the time, we received many phone calls from 990 filers who were confused by the new regulations and somewhat concerned that the public could access their tax information so easily.
The GuideStar Pages for 990 filers also include images of the organizations' 990s — we have at least two years' worth in most cases — the names of their Board Members and a financial page listing revenue, expenses and a multi-year balance sheet that shows assets, liabilities and fund balance figures.
In addition to providing access to PDF images of the actual 990s, GuideStar digitizes approximately 400 fields from the form and is creating a number of analytical tools from this information that will help improve efficiency within the nonprofit community.

Dan Moore, vice president of public affairs at GuideStar, acknowledged that his group sees a tremendous business opportunity in the accountability area and in the Finance Committee white paper, but isn’t “betting the ranch” this is going to go through.
GuideStar made roughly $2 million in earned income last year, and a large portion of that came from data sales, he said.

These results parallel those of a July 2003 GuideStar survey and show a slight improvement over one conducted at the end of last year.
In November 2002, 48 percent of respondents said contributions had decreased, 28 percent stated they had increased, 22 percent reported they were about the same, and 3 percent did not know.

A survey of individuals associated with charitable organizations shows that contributions are beginning to increase this year, compared with the first half of 2002, according to the nonprofit resource firm GuideStar.
In addition, 35 percent of participants said contributions decreased during the first half of 2003, compared to 48 percent who reported decreased contributions in 2002.
GuideStar plans to conduct a follow-up survey in October to determine whether the positive trend continued during the third quarter of 2003.
