	Guided by Voices - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Guided by Voices (often abbreviated as GBV) was an extremely prolific lo-fi/indie-rock band from Dayton, Ohio.
		While Guided by Voices progressed over time from an aspiring bar band, to willfully scuzzy basement obscurantists, to a relatively professional riff-pop machine in the latter half of the 90s, the constants throughout were Pollard's seemingly instinctual grasp of the pop form, his digestion of reams of rock history, and his gift for melodic invention.
		On November 9, 2004 Guided by Voices performed on the stage of Austin City Limits, broadcast by PBS on January 22, 2005.

		Since forming Guided By Voices in 1983, with the help of brother Jimmy and "manager for life" Pete Jamison (they both went in on a loan with Bob from the Dayton Public Schools Credit Union to finance their early records), Bob Pollard has recorded 10 GBV albums with 51 different lineups (see GBV family tree).
		Though Bob had first met the band in 1994, while GBV and CV were touring together on the Scat Records Insects of Rock Tour, he had been a longtime fan of their previous band, Death of Samantha.

	TWAS 13: Guided by Voices
		The muted, distorted voices on the long near-instrumental "Portrait Destroyed by Fire" are disconcerting, as is the fact that there are several dark instrumental snippets on the album in the first place.
		The central energizing tension in Guided by Voices music, at least in my opinion, comes from the way they mix an apparent sonic indifference (though I'm becoming more and more convinced that this is carefully cultivated) with enthusiastically complicated and polished melodies.
		GbV songs are frequently concise, even some of the great ones, but they nearly always seem developed to some logical point; even if that point is just one verse and 32 seconds, it's usually a tight verse.

	The Rock Robot's Guide to Guided By Voices
		Airport 5 (and of course GBV's Tonics and Twisted Chasers) is characterized as having softer, beatier, and keyboard-based grooves, which strays from the rock of GBV quite a bit.
		GBV embraces vinyl, which is probably one of the most annoying things about the band, for someone like me living in a city in Canada which has maybe one store which actually sells the stuff.
		Raphael is one of those longer GBV songs (a whole three minutes!) which would have actually worked better as a minute-long ditty, since it pretty much repeats itself for the entire length of the song.

	Guided by Voices
		Singer/guitarist/revered visionary Robert Pollard, then a Dayton schoolteacher, started Guided by Voices in 1983 with a bunch of friends, essentially as a hobby, and over the next decade, the group remained just that, rarely performing, employing a rotating cast of musicians, and periodically self-releasing four-track cassettes.
		This was an awkward transition, as Guided by Voices' uneven 1999 effort Do the Collapse (recorded with onetime Cars frontman Rik Ocasek) demonstrates, but it reached fruition with the excellent 2001 album Isolation Drills (the producer this time was Rob Schnaft, who has worked with Beck and Elliott Smith among others).
		In addition to their fourteen full-lengths and many singles, Guided By Voices has also issued a pair of box sets, one a collection of early albums and another a compilation of unreleased material spanning the group's career.
