A Fastway bus in the guided bus lane on Southgate Avenue, Crawley
Plans for a guided busway in Cambridgeshire met with local opposition, with campaigns such as CAST.IRON advocating the re-opening of the Cambridge to St Ives railway line however in December 2005 the scheme was approved and funding was confirmed late in June 2006 [2].
A further development of the guided bus is the "tramway on tires", a rubber-tired vehicle guided by a fixed rail in the ground, which draws current from overhead electric wires like a conventional tram.

A guided busway is a specially constructed, dedicated bus lane, the width of one bus, along which specially adapted buses can travel.
As the bus approaches the start of the busway the driver guides the bus into the special trackway.
Bus stop infrastructure is also a major area of partnership development with the introduction of improved bus stop and timetable information, and raised kerbs at bus stops that make boarding low floor buses even easier.

Bus Priority Systems (Bus Rapid Transit) - Special Feature On Kerb Guided Buses (O-Bahn)
With the advent of the low-floor bus the duo-buses became seen to be of an obsolete design and with the cessation of guided bus services through the tunnels they have now been replaced with fully accessible low floor motorbuses.
Guided busway services were withdrawn in September 2005 when the majority of buses fitted with guide wheels were decommissioned for age reasons, and it was decided not to adapt their replacements.
Other comments included that riding the guided section was no different to anywhere else and locating the bus stops in the guideway improves road safety (some years ago this lady saw a car crash into a bus whilst stationary at a stop which, because there was not a 'pull-in' was located in the normal carriageway).

The guided busway was expected to have opened to fare paying passengers at the same time as the Dome, (ie: 1st January 2000!) but whilst the special buses did enter passenger service (using the public highway) the busway remained closed for further testing.
One unexpected problem for the guided busway (virtually a final nail in the coffin) was that Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate (under whose jurisdiction new 'fixed infrastructure transports' - including all types of guided bus technology - now comes) started to apply the same gold-plated very demanding safety criteria that they use on the railways.

The Seattle Times: Opinion: Bus Rapid Transit: the solution to the region's gridlock
Bus tunnels, of course, are busways that are under ground.
The same technology, because it so accurately guides them, would allow four lanes of buses to pass each other in the downtown Seattle transit tunnel, and thus permit "skip stops" with the consequent doubling of transit through-put.
Bus Rapid Transit is, or should be, the mode of choice for high-capacity transit in the metropolitan Puget Sound region.

"Misguided Bus"? Nancy's BRT Debacle Exposes Pitfalls of "Half-Price Tramway"
But a few have opted instead for this or that "guided bus" scheme, mainly goaded by politicians jumping at what they think is the chance to install a "tramway at half price".
After all, for about the same capital expense, the "guided bus" does not hold great promise for lowering operating costs like LRT – even multi-articulated buses aren't as large as LRT cars, nor can they be entrained to minimize peak labor costs.
One is tempted to suspect that the extra-long, multi-articulated bus benefits from having its axles guided by such a mechanism, possibly minimizing any misalignment of the rear section while in the guideway (which might explain why the vehicle tends to "fishtail" when free-running).
