		The priest-poet Guido Gezelle (1830-1899) was the centre of a great deal of attention from the Belgian media in the spring of 1999.
		Gezelle was not only a priest of the revival, but also of the commitment in the sharp ideological disputes (the so-called clerical-liberal battle) that characterized Belgian society in the period from 1850 tot 1880.

		Contrary to the earlier romantic viewpoint, he was deeply involved in local politics and objected fiercely against childlabour, illiteracy… The myth of his originality and creativity is hurt as well : his rich, varied lexicon is the result of his knowledge and love of the older masters of literature.
		We leave it up to Gezelle himself to sum it up by quoting a verse that combines all his sources of inspiration: his mystic experience of God, his intimate friendship for his pupils, his love of his language and his rave over nature.
