Twisted Roots of The Third Reich
Guido Von List, an Austrian mystic, was born in Vienna in 1848.
Von List's aim was to discover the sacred, lost heritage of the principles of this religion.
Von List, in describing his vision for a future Aryan state, noted it would have these chahacteristics: it would be a strict hierarchy, in which leaders are obeyed without question; it woud be strictly patriarchal in its nature; only Aryans would be citizens; there would be strict laws to maintain the purity of the blood.

Guido Karl Anton List, better known as Guido von List (October 5, 1848 - May 17, 1919), author of Secret of the Runes, was an occult and völkisch author who is seen as one of the most important figures in Germanic mysticism and runic revivalism in the late 19th, early 20th Century.
List claimed that the dominance of the Roman Catholic Church in Austria-Hungary constituted a continuing occupation of the Germanic tribes by the Roman empire, albeit now in a religious form, and a continuing persecution of the ancient religion of the Germans and Celts.

Von List was born in 1848 in Vienna, he said he was a psychic and had visions of the past in which he was initiated into the secrets of the ancient tutonic tribes.
After the death of Von List in 1919, Runes would play a significant part in National Socialist insignia and it was compulsory for SS officers to learn the meanings of the Runic symbols.
Von List used to say that the Swastika was "twice high holy secret of constant generation, the swastika is the very act of creation ", he based this on Norse legend about the creation of the universe.

Von List made up a bunch of stuff that made sense to him but isn't very well connected to the meaning of the runes.
The fact is, that von List at least once had a prophetic vision, that he vividly described, and that if I am not mistaken happened when he slept one night at the ruins of a Roman Colony that was razed to the ground by the German tribesmen.
I know not if Guido was aware of the writings of Snorri Sturlusson and the other Sagas, but it would seem that either he was not, or else that he thought that, the Germans had a religion and a tradition far more ancient than that of the North Germanics.

 Bruce Walton's "Underground Nazi Invasion"
that these potential sources of trouble were purged from nazi life should not be taken to mean that hitler and the nazi secret societies were not influenced by mystical and occult writers such as madame blavatsky, houston stewart chamberlain, guido von list, lanz von liebenfels, rudolf steiner, george gurdjieff, karl haushofer and theodor fritsch.
The Nazi party was influenced by one branch of the occult fringe - represented by the Thule Society, Guido von List, and Lanz von Liebenfels.
The opposition was mutual; Steiner deplored the "racialist mysticism" of von List, and in turn was denounced from the radical right, and even placed on a hit list.

The Occult Roots of Nazism (review)
We were introduced to the enigmatic figures of Rudolf von Sebottendorf and other supposed adepts of the fabled Thule Society, which now have become household words among even casual students of the period; and behind them an earlier strain of philosophers who, shockingly enough, had erected a religious worldview upon "Aryan" racialism.
Guido von List (the aristocratic von was self-assumed) was raised a Catholic but early took interest in Nordic paganism, which he coupled with a profound attraction to nature.
Sebottendorf was blamed for having allowed the Thule membership list to fall into the Reds' hands, although there were those who suggested that this was his Machiavellian intent all along, as the ensuing creation of martyrs played a key role in the nationalist victory.

According to List, Wotanism had been the ancient Aryan religion-although, in fact, List's description of Wotanism was mostly lifted from Theosophy (in particular he borrowed Blavatsky's idea of "root races" and her cyclical view of history).
As evidence of this lost tradition, List interpreted folk- tales, place-names and heraldic symbolism as a kind of secret code that had been formulated by the Aryan priesthood to pass on their occult teachings in the face of Christian persecution.
List outlined a code of racial purity he claimed had once been practiced by Germans as a kind of ancient eugenics program; families were required keep records certifying their racial purity; education, public service and all legal rights were reserved exclusively for Germans; nonAryans were fit only to be slaves.

Guido von List (1848-1919) was an eccentric person who played a significant part for the members of the Germanen Order.
von List died in 1919, but his teachings survived through the National Socialists and came to play an important part in its insignia and it was mandatory for SS officers to learn the occult meanings of the Runic symbols.
von Liebenfels believed the Atlanteans had had a strict breeding control, in form of laws, to retain their psychic abilities and he wanted to re-create the Aryan race from the Atlantis era, by purifying the blood of the Germans by using new strict race laws.

THE ILLUMINATI - PETER LEVENDA AND THE MAGICKAL ROOTS OF NAZISM interview by Tracy R. Twyman
In that same year, occult researcher Guido von List began The List Society, part of a then-developing "völkish" (folkish) movement extolling the virtues of Norse heritage, heritage which could be traced by reading the Edda, a compilation of Icelandic legends which Hitler would later take great interest in.
When someone like Lanz von Liebenfels decides to resurrect the Templars, it is not as the pious Catholic monk/knights but as heroic enemies of Catholicism and, by extension, Judaism as well.
The "volkish" pagan mystic Guido von List and the ex-Cistercian monk Lanz von Leibenfels promoted esoteric metaphysical theories concerning the secret history of the Aryan/Germanic race and the corrupting nature of Christianity and Judaism.

It was revealed that Guido Von List had attribitued such meaning to the rune Raido, and since then I have seen a few webpages here and there which also mention this meaning.
So in summary, the important news is that it appears that Von List was mistaken about the Raido-Rta connection and that there is no evidence to support that interpretation of the rune in question.
It is true that in List's commentary on this stave he draws a parallel between the stave form that we normally associate with Raiðo and Rita.
