Guildford Labour Party - East Guildford news
If Guildford has to take its share of Surrey's housing requirements, then some building outside the urban area will be inevitable.
The Guildford Borough planners at the time of the previous proposals were also opposed to extending the northern boundary of the town.
In the face of huge public opposition, County officials have recommended that the proposals for 4000 houses in Guildford's Green Belt should be scrapped.

 - CRANLEIGH RAILWAY - Cranleigh Station
It is the only railway line in Surrey to have been closed down by the infamous Dr. Richard Beeching, in his report of March 1963 “The reshaping of British Railways” This report recommended the closing one third of Britains Railway lines and stations (leaving us with roughly what we have today).
After 'Baynards', the line left Surrey and moved into West Sussex, with stations at 'Rudgwick' and 'Slinfold', before rejoining the main line at 'Stammerham Junction' (now 'Christs Hospital' station), for the final part of the journey to 'Horsham'.
This site provides information on, the now closed, Guildford to Horsham Direct Railway, often referred to as the 'Cranleigh Line'; Cranleigh being the largest village that the line served.

The railway line from Guildford to Redhill (route to Gatwick Airport) provides marvellous views of the Surrey countryside.
Woking Station was on Woking Heath in the middle of nowhere (Woking owes its existence to the arrival of the railway).
Since the erection of barriers on all the exits to the station and their manning by a large number of surly individuals, the traveller, on arrival at Guildford Station, could be forgiven for believing he is in Eastern Europe under the Communist era and the station is being manned by the Stasi.
