The day-to-day administration of the Corporation of London is now conducted from modern buildings immediately to the north of the Guildhall, but the Guildhall itself, and the adjacent historic interiors, are still used for official functions, and it is open to the public during the annual London Open House weekend.
The Clockmakers' Museum and the Guildhall Library, a public reference library with specialist collections on London which include material from the 11th century onwards, are also housed in the complex.

The Guildhall was badly damaged by the Great Fire in 1666; the subsequent rebuilding and additions, such as the neo-Gothic style south frontage erected in 1789, were damaged in an air-raid in 1940.
Other public occasions are the election of Sheriffs on June 24, a picturesque and colorful ceremony held on a dais erected at the east end of the Great Hall, and the swearing in of the new Lord Mayor, another annual ceremony conducted with traditional ritual.
The Guildhall is also used for official receptions and banquets, and is closed to the public for two to three days before and after such occasions.

The Guildhall Gallery was established in 1885 but the original building was gutted by fire during the Blitz, destroying many valuable works.
The demolition of the old Gallery building revealed the archaeological remains of London's lost amphitheatre which are now incorporated in the basement of the gallery, which opened to the public in 1999.
The paintings are mainly of historical rather than artistic interest with battle scenes, London cityscapes from the 17th century to the present day, and portraits of former mayors and other dignitaries.

The site of Guildhall was significant even earlier, as indicated by the remains of the long-lost Roman amphitheatre which were discovered in 1987-8 underneath what is now Guildhall Yard.
The Old Library, used for a reception prior to the Award's ceremony, housed the Guildhall reference library and the Guildhall Museum from 1873 until 1974 when the collections moved to accommodation in the newly constructed west wing and the Museum of London.

The London collection is rich in information on the city's architecture, both in books listed here and in those of other categories, not the least of which is Stow's Svrvay of London.

Unfortunately, although the Guildhall itself is open to the public and is free to enter, the East Crypt is usually open only to Groups for guided tours.
The crypts of the Guildhall are rarely open to the public except for occasional guided tours, but are usually open to the public for one weekend in September, which is when I took thse photographs.
The crypts have a number of stained glass windows dedicated to famous Londoners such as Dick Whittington, as well as several dedicated to various of the City Guilds, and there is one set of three that commemorates the life of Pepys.
