The new gallery, built at a cost of over 70 million GBP, is especially strong in its selection of Victorian works by the pre-Raphaelites such as Millais and Rossetti, as well as by landscape genius John Constable.
The gallery, which also has English portraits and London subjects from the 17th century to today, is open from 10:00 to 17:00 Mondays to Saturdays, noon to 16:00 on Sundays.

September 2005 we undertook an investigation into the effects of visiting the Guildhall Art Gallery on self-report stress and arousal as well as levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
There was a tendency for the male participants to have higher levels of cortisol on arrival at the gallery, although this did not reach conventional statistical significance (mean ± SEM concentrations: 7.44 ± 1.31nmol/l and 4.54 ± 0.78 nmol/l for males and females respectively, t=2.001, df=23, p= 0.057).
At the end of the gallery visit there was no difference between the average cortisol concentrations of the 2 groups (mean ± SEM concentrations: 4.03 ± 0.33 nmol/l and 3.80 ± 0.41 nmol/l respectively) (see Figure 6).
