The proprietors of Guilford made very attractive proposals to potential settlers, resulting in the town's rapid growth in its earliest days.
Matters were so bad in 1783 that the government of Vermont sent Ethan Allen to Guilford with the militia to enforce martial law and collect taxes (the so-called "Guilford War").
The office of Hale, Vermont went into operation on March 24, 1896, but it never flourished, and was discontinued in 1903.

Guilford is in the southernmost line of Vermont towns bordering upon Bernardston, Leyden and Colrain, Massachusetts.
The sugar maple is one of the town's most valuable assets and has been utilized since the earliest days of its settlement, when the pioneer with only the crudest of implements and apparatus could supply his family with a food product of inestimable value.
Guilford's principal streams are Green River flowing south along its western border and Broad Brook with its several branches, all were originally well stocked with trout and flowed into the Connecticut River near the north line of Vernon.

When the sewage treatment system failed at Vermont's busiest interstate highway rest area, "up from the ground came a bubblin'" something that was crude and smelly, but it wasn't oil.
The Living Machine could be installed to serve the existing facilities at the Guilford center, and because the system was a modular design, it could be moved to another rest area when the center was relocated.
Sewage from the rest area is treated to Vermont's reuse standards and recycled to the rest area as flush water in the toilets.

My name is Pat Lyman and one of at least two in the crowd at the Guilford Selectboard meeting on 5/12, held at the Guilford School cafeteria that supported the evacuation plan as a process that is constantly being maintained and tested by VEMA and Vermont Yankee and area volunteers.
The Halifax Selectman (Ray White) suggested an alternate site west of location for evacuation and have that corner of Guilford part of that plan and mentioned funding was slow coming to this area, awareness and education was important.
This type of information shows that VEMA and Vermont Yankee care about the community and are working to create a plan that works.

By the 1970s, the Guilford center's leachfleld system failed, and sewage could be seen bubbling out of the ground.
On Nov. 1, 1999, it was decommissioned when a new Guilford Visitor's Center opened eight kilometers (five miles) north on 1-91.The new center is hooked into Brattleboro's waste-water treatment system.
Foster said the Living Machine is in storage now, but there are plans to install it next year to solve a similar wastewater problem at a rest area on I-89 in Sharon, Vt.
