  Guinea (Coin) - LoveToKnow 1911
It was first coined in 1663, in the reign of Charles II., from gold imported from the Guinea coast of West Africa by a company of merchants trading under charter from the British crown - hence the name.
Many of the first guineas bore an elephant on one side, this being the stamp of the company; in 1675 a castle was added.
It was last coined in 1813, and was superseded in 1817 by the present principal gold coin, the sovereign.

The guineas of this reign weighed 8.5 grams, were 25–26 mm in diameter, and were the work of James and Norbert Roettier and were produced in all years between 1689 and 1694 both with and without the elephant and castle; in 1692 and 1693 the mark of the elephant alone was also used.
George I's guinea coins were struck in all years between 1714 and 1727, with the elephant and castle sometimes appearing in 1721, 1722, and 1726.

The guinea was also a British coin, minted of gold imported from West Africa and originally issued in 1663 as equal to one pound or twenty shillings.
The coins had an elephant stamped on them, and on the edges inscribed "Decus et Tutamen" (ornament and safeguard, which was the purpose of the inscription, an anti-clipping measure).
The guinea coin was minted until 1821, when a new coin worth exactly a pound, the sovereign was introduced under George IV.

 British coin Quarter Guinea
Sir Isaac Newton, the Master of the Mint, wrote a minute dated 21 September 1717 in which he blamed the overvaluation of the Guinea at twenty one shillings and sixpence for this, and this resulted in a Proclamation of 20 December reducing the value of the guinea to twenty one shillings.
The new coin had to be proportionate in size to the other gold denominations, and this resulted in a coin which weighed 2.1 grams and was 16 millimetres in diameter.
Despite its' miniscule size, the coin took the form of a scaled-down version of the guinea and half-guinea, including all the intricate cruciform shields on the reverse and all the king's Hanoverian titles.

Despite the unpopularity of the 1718 quarter guinea it was considered necessary to produce this coin again, to the same size and weight as before, to fill the gap between the low denomination silver coins and the larger gold coins.

Silver coins would simply become tokens for their face value in gold, regardless of the intrinsic value of silver (so long as this was less than the face value!).
As it happened, even as the actual Guinea coins must have passed out of ordinary use, the "Guinea" as a unit of value survived: Objects of particular value, like jewelry, or professional services, as for a lawyer, might be expressed in Guineas rather than pounds.
The modern British 5p coin, which is the decimal descendant of the shilling, thus may be said to be the last link to Roman coinage, although, as the solidus, it only existed on paper for the many centuries of the silver penny.

The Straight Dope: In Britain, what's the difference between a pound and a guinea?
A pound is equal to 20 shillings, a guinea is equal to 21--or at least they used to be, since guineas and shillings, strictly speaking, aren't around anymore.
The coins came to be known as guineas thanks to the British mind's great gift for association: they were minted of gold imported from the Guinea Coast of West Africa.
The guinea survived only in the popular imagination, a shorthand way of saying, "one pound and one shilling." Nowadays, if the term is used at all, it's used in come-on advertising, "only one guinea" being the British equivalent of our "only $9.98." If you look fast, it looks cheap.

Gold Five Guinea. A Brief History
During the reign of Charles II and before, right up to the Napoleonic wars, the denominational value of gold coins was reflected by the intrinsic gold content they contained; thus while those old enough to remember that a guinea was worth 21 shillings or £1, 1s as standard, this was not always the case.
Although the coin is officially referred to as a 'five-guinea' piece, this name was unofficial during the 17th and 18th century.
Their time as a useable coin came to an end when they were demonetised during the great re-coinage of 1816 and the guinea was replaced by the sovereign.
