The town, located on a narrow peninsula that juts out of Samar like a tail, is approached by land in a round about way, involving a trip to Catbalogan on the west and a mountain crossing to Taft on the east coast, then a long trip south.
In 1768, Guiuan and other southern Samar missions were given to the Augustinians who were given spiritual charge of Leyte.
Though Guiuan belongs geographically to Samar Island, it was in fact easier to supervise it from Leyte.

TACLOBAN CITY-Power outages hit most parts of Samar and Leyte islands while three fishermen were reported missing in Leyte as tropical storm "Dindo" battered Eastern Visayas and parts of Central Visayas Sunday.
Sunday, it was located at 130 km east-northeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar and was expected to be 110 km southeast of Virac, Catanduanes, by Monday morning.
Joseph Nogra, administrator of the Office of Civil Defense in Eastern Visayas, said 600 passengers, seven buses, 56 light vehicles and 32 trucks were stranded at the Look terminal, while another 800 passengers on board in 20 buses, 21 light vehicles and 40 trucks failed to leave the Dapdap ferry terminal, both in Allen town.

Save from the residents of Guiuan, a town situated in the southern tip of the province of Eastern Samar, very few are aware of the existence of a former United States Naval Base and Airfield Complex in this municipality.
Indeed, the residents of Guiuan and Eastern Samar have remained unaware of a hidden historical treasure waiting to be unearthed in their midst.
We interviewed old residents near the naval base and operating base; we interviewed guerilla veterans of WWII still living in the vicinity of Eastern Samar especially those who operated their guirilla units in the southern area where these bases were located.
