 Promoting medicinal plants
GUJARAT Ayurved University, Jamnagar, has undertaken a project to promote awareness about medicinal plants among farmers and make them cultivate the plants on a large scale to meet the needs of the ayurvedic systems as well as to cater to the export requirements, Dr. P.N.V Kurup, the Vice-chancellor of the university, has said.
To counter the trend and sensitise the rural people about the locally available medicinal plants, he said, the university had taken up the project to train farmers.
Kurup said the university had ambitious plans to cover all the villages in Gujarat in two or three years and the experiment would be successful like the Anand-model milk cooperatives.

Also, the Gujarat Ayurved University has prescribed rasayab chruna to enhance the power of the human immune system.‘‘The formula for the disinfectant has been derived from the Kashyup Shahitya, authored by Maharshi Kashyap, an ancient Ayurved scientist,’’ said Sarvikar.
According to the Gujarat Ayuerved University, officials of the Surat Ayuerved College have been given the responsibity to execute the project.

Shailaja Chandra, Secretary, Department of Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoeopathy in the Ministry of Health and Family, said steps like standardisation of drugs, finalisation of processes relating to certification and creation of necessary infrastructure were being taken apart from training and developing the human resources needed for the effective growth of the system.
Releasing the report on the results of the recently concluded international seminar on ``Ayurveda and traditional medicines - scope and challenges'', organised by the Gujarat Ayurved University at Jamnagar, Ms.
The seminar, she said, has suggested adoption of a strategy to develop a common language and an appropriate interface between Ayurveda and allopathy.

The Central Council of Research on Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS) was created in 1978 as a part of ISMandH in order to coordinate, develop and promote scientific research.
There is a Central Office in New Delhi, and the CCRAS develops its activities through a network of 86 Centres and Institutes which controls directly, and through other units located at Universities and Tertiary Institutions on Ayurveda and Siddha.
