IAOL Bulletin 44, 2000 - Review of Cristoph Kaderas, by Thomas H. Hahn
The terminological exploration Kaderas embarks upon finds fault with a number of western publications which treated leishu as their subject of discussion, but failed to grasp the specificity of the individual works, thus annihilating the differences and generalizing the content.
One of the works mentioned is the well-know Indiana Companion to traditional Chinese Literature, which operates, Kaderas states, under the assumption that the Erya 爾雅 is by nature and genre the same as the Gujin tushu jicheng 古今圖書集成 (p.
That both works are more than 1500 years apart, a time in which editorial and classificatory standards developed to a very sophisticated stage, is not taken into account by the Companion.

The introduction of copper-engraving into China - 62nd IFLA General Conference
Copper-printing has been known in China for a long time; prints from copper seals date back to the 3rd century BC, and at the end of the Song dynasty and during the Yuan dynasty paper money was printed from copper-plates - a practice which revolutionised world economy later on.
Copper-printing was also used for books, and the latest and largest venture of this kind was the Imperial Encyclopedia Gujin tushu jicheng of 1726, consisting of 10,000 chapters all printed from movable type.
In contrast, copper-engraving was introduced into China by European artists.

 The Chinese Language (www.chinaknowledge.de)
There did not exist a standardized style of transscription until the late 19th century.
Typically for the early transscriptions was the hard style transscription of the sounds [dj] or [tç] as "k", like "kin" for [djin] or "kü" for [tçy], for instance "King-ting ku-kin t'u-shu ki-ch'eng" for 清定古今圗書集成 (pinyin: Qing ding Gujin tushu jicheng).
Many geographic names of China are still known today in their old transscription like the provinces Shan-tung, Fo-kien, Kiang-su, or the cities of Peking and Kanton.
