Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. Gulf Islands, British Columbia, Canada
Established in 2003 by Parks Canada, the Gulf Islands National Park was formed to protect the area’s unique ecosystem, which is rich with ecologically diverse plants and sea-life including: gnarled Garry oaks, delicate wild lilies, thick kelp beds and magnificent Orca whales.
Known as the Southern Gulf Islands, these islands are blessed by Canada’s only Mediterranean-type climate—warm and dry in the summer and mild and wet in the winter.
The park areas on the larger islands ( Saturna, Mayne and the Penders) are accessible by BC Ferries, while the others areas can only be reached by water taxi, private boat or kayak.

CIA - The World Factbook -- Field Listing - Background
Presently the island is a National Wildlife Refuge run by the US Department of the Interior; a day beacon is situated near the middle of the west coast.
The uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th century; they subsequently became a trading center for African slaves and later an important coaling and resupply stop for whaling and transatlantic shipping.
Tourism continues to be important to the island's economy, although international business has overtaken it in recent years.

Proposal for Inclusion of Salt Spring Island
Community support for a National Park on Salt Spring will be much stronger if additional protection of ecological values on Salt Spring is achieved and if measures are taken to assist the island in meeting the inevitable increase in tourism.
It is also hoped that, with National Park involvement, ecological corridors connecting Ruckle and Russell Island could be developed through land acquisition or by use of tools such as covenants with private owners.
Parks Canada should also provide or enter into funding partnerships on infrastructure such as shuttle ferries and buses, and bike lanes to minimize potential impacts associated with greater automobile traffic to Salt Spring.

Located in the protected waters of the southern Strait of Georgia, between Vancouver and Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands are a haven for many threatened and endangered species such as: the Anatum Peregrine Falcon, the Sharp Tailed Snake, the Townsend’s Big Eared Bat and the Western Meadowlark.
This expansion would place the western edge of the park more in line with Glacier National Park just south of the Canada/US border in Montana, and would complete an important wildlife corridor.
Parks Canada will carry out a feasibility study as the next step in conserving this area.
