In addition to starting both full audits, the Gulf News has recommended that they should go further and carry out comprehensive end-to-end audits that exceed international standards, given the local conditions that exist in the Gulf.
Earlier this year, Gulf News followed this challenge with a recommendation to the Circulation Audit Steering Committee (CASTOR) that the scope of the standard audit has to be widened in the Gulf to cover most of the loopholes used by unscrupulous publishers to misrepresent facts and figures.
Gulf News once again recommends that advertisers and agencies seek to apply the same end-to-end audit to other publications, to authenticate their claims and also substantiate any claims of 'highest circulation'.

Water samples were collected by the OSV Bold in the Gulf from Sept. 27 through Oct. 2, 2005 at monitoring stations in the river channels and nearshore waters surrounding the Mississippi Delta.

 Good News for Gulf Sea Turtles
On August 21, new regulations issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) went into effect requiring shrimpers in the gulf to use enlarged turtle excluder devices (TEDs) that allow larger sea turtles, such as the endangered leatherback and loggerhead turtles, to escape shrimpers' nets.
NMFS expects the new TEDs to reduce leatherback annual mortality in shrimp nets by 97% and loggerhead mortality by 94%.
The cost of a new TED is only about $220, and some shrimpers may qualify for federal financial assistance to implement the new regulations.

Louisiana State University is forecasting that the "Dead Zone" off the coast of Louisiana and Texas this summer will be larger than the average size since 1990.
This NOAA supported modeling effort, led by Eugene Turner, Ph.D., of LSU, predicts this summer's "Dead Zone" will be 6,700 square miles, an area the half the size of the state of Maryland.
City of Houston planners are awaiting approval from the Internal Revenue Service to finance the wind turbine purchase, which would be funded through a new type of bond program administered by the IRS that was set up following the passage of the Energy Tax Incentives Act last year.

Only three weeks after Hurricane Katrina pummeled the Gulf Coast and became one of the biggest stories in recent memory, TV news braced itself and got ready for another huge hurricane taking aim at another part of the region.
