Gulf Oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gulf, headquartered in Pittsburgh was one of the chief instruments of the legendary Mellon fortune.
Gulf was at the forefront of various projects in the late 1960s intended to adjust the world oil industry to developments of the time including closure of the Suez canal after the 1967 war.
Gulf operations worldwide were struggling financially in the recession of the early 1980s and Gulf management devised the "Big Jobber" strategic realignment in 1981 along with a programme of selective divestments in order to maintain viability.

The Persian Gulf, also known as the Arabian Gulf, is a 600-mile-long body of water which separates Iran from the Arabian Peninsula, and one of the most strategic waterways in the world due to its importance in world oil transportation.
Oil heading westwards by tanker from the Persian Gulf towards the Suez Canal or Sumed pipeline must pass through the Bab al-Mandab.
This oil was exported mainly via pipeline from Iraq's Kirkuk oil region to the Turkish port of Ceyhan and by truck to Jordan.

The complete dependence of the industrialized world on oil, much of which resided beneath the surface of Middle Eastern countries, became painfully clear to the U.S., Western Europe, and Japan, marking a watershed requiring Western policymakers to respond to international economic constraints that were qualitatively different from those faced by their predecessors.
Oil, especially from the Middle East, was paid for in United States dollars, at prices fixed in dollars.
The 73' oil crisis was a major factor in Japanese economy shift away from oil-intensive industries and resulted in huge Japanese investments in industries like electronics.

In 1951 Gulf Oil Corporation completed one of the world's largest (at the time) catalytic cracking units in Port Arthur, Texas, and in the same year began construction of plants in Port Arthur for the manufacture of ethylene and isooctyl alcohol, a major move in developing its petrochemicals capacity.
Gulf was producing oil and gas from eleven nations as its explorations continued in thirty countries.
In 1983 Gulf was still the sixth largest oil company in the United States and managed to turn its oil reserve crisis around, replacing 95 percent of its reserves by the end of the year.

The Arabian Gulf (also known as the Persian Gulf) is an important source of petroleum for the rest of the world, and contrary to popular belief, the relative importance of the region as a source of supply is set to expand, not decline.
Oil producing states, on the other hand, have less to fear from global oil supply disruptions and can actually benefit from a higher price of oil, provided that the price does not have the effect of causing a global economic downturn that, in turn, reduces demand and could cause a plummet in prices.
The oil share of the world energy pie does not increase in the forecast because countries in many parts of the world are expected to switch from oil to natural gas and other fuels, particularly for electricity generation.

It has produced 88.8 percent of the crude oil and condensate and 83.2 percent of the natural gas extracted from all federal OCS territories from the beginning of oil and gas exploration and development in the U.S. through the end of 1996.
The main reasons are the discovery of oil and gas in deepwater fields of the central Gulf of Mexico, deepwater royalty tax relief, and new and improved technology used to extract oil from the deepwater Gulf.
The deepwater Gulf of Mexico has emerged as the country’s most significant oil and gas province, and some estimates say within the next four to five years as much as 30 percent of the country’s total domestic output will originate from the Gulf of Mexico.

Crude Oil Imports From Persian Gulf 2004
It should be noted that several factors influence the source of a company's crude oil imports.
While, in general, crude oil is fungible, i.e., one crude oil can be substituted for another, many refineries are optimized by refining crude oil with specific qualities (e.g., the API gravity, the amount of sulfur in the crude oil, etc.).
Also, depending on the global crude oil market condition at the time, the price difference between heavy and light crude oils varies, thus changing the economic dynamics for different refineries.

These untapped oil and gas reserves can be found by matching hydrocarbon chemical signatures with geologic models for stratigraphic layers under the sea floor, said Lawrence M. Cathles, a professor of chemical geology at Cornell.
The northern Gulf of Mexico basin is one of the world's most active areas of hydrocarbon exploration.
In the study area this represents about 60 billion barrels of oil and 370 trillion cubic feet of gas and is the hydrocarbon that could be extracted, Cathles said.

Gulf oil output likely to remain low - The Clarion-Ledger
NEW ORLEANS — The Gulf of Mexico's offshore petroleum industry is far from recovering from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and at least one-sixth of the region's normal daily oil production still will be off line at the start of next storm season, a federal agency says.
As of this week, the MMS said 396,000 of the Gulf's normal daily production of 1.5 million barrels of oil were being kept from market because of storm damage, along with 1.8 billion cubic feet of the region's normal daily production of 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas.
Oil prices have been around $67 per barrel and gas has hovered — after a huge jump in the fall — around $9 per thousand cubic feet.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, crude oil futures settled at $69.81 a barrel yesterday, a 3.9 percent jump, after touching a high of $70.85 a barrel earlier in the day, a reflection of how little slack there is on global energy markets to make up for shortages in the gulf.
Because of the experience from Hurricane Ivan, which slammed into the gulf last September, much of the concern centered on the underwater pipelines that link the 4,000 platforms in the gulf to the mainland.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — More than 120 Gulf of Mexico oil and gas platforms were still shut down Saturday and nearly 60% of the gulf's normal daily oil production remained blocked from the market because of evacuations due to Hurricane Katrina, a federal agency said.

Normally, the Gulf of Mexico produces 547.5 million barrels of oil and 3.65 trillion cubic feet of gas annually.

DALLAS - Chevron Corp., Shell Oil and BP PLC began evacuating employees from offshore oil and gas platforms and drilling rigs as Tropical Storm Rita churned Monday toward the Gulf of Mexico and threatened to compound the damage left by Hurricane Katrina.
Chevron and Shell Oil, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch/Shell Group, are two of the biggest producers in the Gulf.

However, oil traders say the damaged rigs will have little impact on the price of oil, because the supply can be made up from imports and the nation's emergency strategic petroleum reserve.
The agency also said that while Rita has caused significant damage to the oil industry, the storm "did not deliver the knockout punch that some had feared" because it veered east of the Houston-Galveston area, where 12 percent of the nation's refinery capacity is located.
Oil trader Phil Flynn, of Alaron Trading, said oil markets are betting that damage to Gulf production facilities was minimal.

Worldandnation: Gulf oil back on Senate's reserve list
After agreeing last week to maintain the existing moratorium on oil and gas drilling off Florida's shores, the U.S. Senate on Tuesday moved forward with conducting an inventory of energy reserves in all U.S. waters, including the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
But Tuesday's decision to mandate government-sponsored seismic testing for gas and oil reserves marked a historic victory for the petroleum industry and its backers in Congress, who have been pushing for an extensive inventory for at least 20 years.
The eastern gulf is also used for Navy and Air Force training from several Florida bases, and Nelson and Martinez said seismic testing could interfere with that, too.

 The Thirty-Year Itch
For the past 30 years, the Gulf has been in the crosshairs of an influential group of Washington foreign-policy strategists, who believe that in order to ensure its global dominance, the United States must seize control of the region and its oil.
Unlike the oil beneath Alaska's frozen tundra, locked away in the steppes of central Asia, or buried under stormy seas, Iraq's crude is readily accessible and, at less than $1.50 a barrel, some of the cheapest in the world to produce.
In the 1970s, America's military presence in the Gulf was virtually nil, so the idea of seizing control of its oil was a pipe dream.
