Given the Gulf’s exposure to potential marine pests and the devastating effects they can have on the Gulf waters and its environment, the Committee believes that more should be done by AQIS to monitor and control the extent of the problem.
It has already been established that adequate wetlands cannot be constructed at the end of the catchment because of the airport bird strike issue, and the inability of sediment trap devices, unless they are extremely large, to capture and retain the finest fractions which carry the highest concentration of pollutants, is widely recognised.

The wetlands in the vicinity of the northern GSV are particularly vulnerable to sewage, thermal and industrial pollution, vandalism and the disruption of natural water flows (see Appendix B).
The Gulf St Vincent is of primary importance to South Australians, for the livlihood it provides, the public amenity, and its precious and diverse environment.

Effects of twine diameter and mesh size in the body of prawn trawls on bycatch in Gulf St. Vincent, Australia - ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Abstract.--The influences on catches and bycatches due to 1) an increase in size of mesh and 2) a reduction in twine diameter in the body of prawn trawls were investigated in Gulf St. Vincent, Australia.
Because there were no significant differences in the selectivity parameters of both new trawl bodies, these results indicated that the main cause of bycatch reduction was the increase in size of mesh in the body of the trawl.
In a recent experiment in Gulf St. Vincent, South Australia (Broadhurst et al., 1999), we provided evidence to suggest, however, that the minimum size mesh (45 mm) throughout the trawls was too small.
