Gulf and Western Industries - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gulf and Western Industries, Inc., for a number of years known as Gulf+Western, was a United States conglomerate.
Its prosaic origins date to a manufacturer named Michigan Bumper Co. founded in 1934, though Charles Bluhdorn treated his 1958 takeover of what was then Michigan Plating and Stamping as its "founding" for the purpose of later anniversaries.
The Talking Heads song "Puzzling Evidence" which is about the commercialization of America mentions the conglomerate in the line "With your Gulf and Western and your Mastercard, got what you wanted and lost what you had".

Conglomerate (company) - Psychology Central   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Conglomerates were popular in the 1960s due to a combination of low interest rates and a repeating bear/bull market, which allowed the conglomerates to buy companies in leveraged buyouts, sometimes at temporarily deflated values.
In order to keep the companies going, many conglomerates were forced to shed the industries they had purchased recently, and by the mid-1970s most had been reduced to shells.
One exception is General Electric, whose huge industrial equipment surplus was turned into a successful rental and leasing business.
