Rhone River - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
From its source to the lake the Rhone is a purely Alpine river, flowing through the great trench which it has cut for itself between two of the loftiest Alpine ranges, and which (save a bit at its north-west end) forms the Canton of the Valais.
It was up its valley that first Greek, then Latin civilization penetrated from the Mediterranean to Lyons, as well as in the loth century the Saracen bandits from their settlement at La Garde Freinet, near the coast of Provence.
Between Lyons and the sea, the Rhone divides four departments on its right bank (Rhone, Loire, Ardeche and Gard) from as many on its left bank (Isere, Drome, Vaucluse and Bouches du Rhone).

Rash told Lyons that he could not keep up with its movement, and when he scanned the skies immediately following its disappearance, there was nothing.

Mountain Railroad - THE MOUNT CENIS RAILWAY AND TUNNEL
Now, again looking at our map, it will be seen that, starting from near the head of the Gulf of Genoa, the boot-like peninsula of Italy stretches for 600 miles from northwest to southeast, pointing directly to the coast of Egypt.
Thus far the route runs entirely overland, avoiding the Mediterranean and its long gulfs, and also skirting the Alps on their northern face.
The main points to be observed are: for the overland route, the Bosphorus, the southern end of the Caspian Sea, and the River Indus; for the return route, the mouth of the Indus, the Persian Gulf, and the valley of the Euphrates.

 Pero Tafur
In the Gulf of Lyons a violent storm arose which carried two of the ships far out to sea, but Tafur's vessel managed to keep to its course, and on Christmas Day 1435 he reached Nice.
We continued our voyage along the Gulf, passing Valona, a large city, which had recently fallen into the hands of the Turks, and then, leaving Esclavonia, we sailed by Albania, which is part of the same coast, and left Italy and the Cape of Spartivento on the right hand.
The Gulf of Venice runs for 800 miles between Italy and Esclavonia, and at the end of it is the island of Corfu, which the Venetians call their door, although Venice is in fact 800 miles away.

Variants - Default by Design? by Richard Egan
Recently, Lee A. Kendter Jr., in his zine Get Them Dots Now published a couple of articles on "What Makes A Good Variant" and "What Is Chrome".
If the Gulf of Lyons is called the Gulf of Lyons, I feel it should be so called on a DIPLOMACY map - I've never seen or heard it referred to as the "Lyons Gulf".
Others obviously feel differently, but I confess my regard for a variant has occasionally been undermined by what I regard as contrived names - and I know I wasn't the only one to laugh at a province called "Iguana Town" on a medieval English variant called "The Men Who Would Be King" (or some such).
