Upstream toward the St. Lawrence, the boundary of the Middle St. Lawrence Estuary is defined by the slightly brackish (0.5 salinity) water that occurs downstream from Orléans Island.
This subdivision of the Gulf does not necessarily correspond to that of the surface water masses that are inhabited by planktonic species and parasites of pelagic fishes.
Gulf species may inhabit one, two, or three of the depth zones, depending on the extent to which they are eurythermic or stenothermic.

March 21: Searching for the Seals
A chill gripped me as I realized that the lack of ice may have already killed the number of seals the Canadian government is allowing to be slaughtered in the Gulf under the current seal quota—long before the seal hunters have even left their ports.
And if there are not enough baby seals still alive for hunters to kill in the Gulf, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will simply allot a higher quota to the hunters who will in a few weeks be shooting seals in the waters northeast of Newfoundland.
We passed over a harbor where many commercial sealing vessels were already moored, geared, and ready to seek and kill the few seal pups left in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Royce also found Alkali American Aster (Symphyotrichum ciliatum), a closely related and invasive non-native plant, growing in a nearby salt-marsh as well as Lepidopteran larvae consuming a large proportion of the endangered S. laurentianum's seeds (achenes).

New study finds multiple invasions increase green crab's Canadian range
A native of Europe, it was probably released among the ballast rocks of ships crossing the Atlantic around the time of the American Revolution.
Since the 1950s, its spread has stalled in Nova Scotia; the waters off Cape Breton and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence were thought to be too cold for the species' survival.
The DNA used to track this invasion suggests that these northern crabs constitute a new invasion front, which may have arrived in the waters around the Strait of Canso through shipping from the North Sea.
