  Vyborg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vyborg (Russian: Вы́борг; Finnish: Viipuri; Swedish: Viborg; German: Wiburg) is a town in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, situated on the Karelian Isthmus near the head of the Bay of Vyborg, 130 km to the northwest of St. Petersburg, 38 km south from Russia's border with Finland, where the Saimensky Canal enters the Gulf of Finland.
During the Finnish Civil War Viipuri was in the hands of the Reds, until it was captured by the Whites on 29 April 1918.
The town was evacuated by June 19 and the defence of Viipuri was entrusted to the 20th Brigade.

The Soviet attack was concentrated on the area east of the city of Viipuri (Vyborg), from the southern village of Tali to north towards Ihantala.
At the same time, the Soviet 59th Army attacked across the islands of the Bay of Viipuri from July 4th on, but the attack to the mainland was thrown back to the sea by the German 122nd Division of the V AK on July 10th.
Further defensive victories were achieved at the Bay of Viipuri, on the northeast side of Lake Ladoga and in Ilomantsi the Soviet contingent was besieged.
