I assume he took his tie off.) He actually had a twinkle in his eye, which is admirable, even amazing, under the circumstances.
I had the suspicion that he is more of a normal person, despite being a movie actor, than other intensely-driven personalities (Hillary and Rudy) running for the office.

Strange cult movie that is not for everyone.
This is one of my favourite cult movies and this might be a good chance to try and look inside my own mind and find out why.
It leads up to a giant feeling of so-what -- but I like to see movies that are a bit different and it always holds me in its strange faded and seedy grip.

He even plays the gumshoe Dark pretty effectively, spitting the Bogey-esque lines out of the side of his mouth with tommy gun speed.
Dark starts flashing back to his early childhood spent in a tumbledown desert gas station, where he saw his mother consummate an affair with another man. Her face starts showing up in the gumshoe story, along with the man she was cheating with, also played by Northam.

A beautifully observed and hilariously funny film about a bingo-caller in a Liverpool working-men's club (Finney) who dreams of writing (and starring in) The Maltese Falcon and recording 'Blue Suede Shoes', only to be plunged into a real murder mystery when he tries to bring his dream world to life.
Gumshoe, unlike most pastiches, doesn't get bogged down in references beyond itself.
The credit for this is due to Finney, who is careful to make it clear that Eddie is a self-conscious dreamer, and to Stephen Frears who, in his first feature, is similarly careful to anchor the film in the gritty world of petty Liverpool crime before animating Eddie's all-encompassing dreams.
