 Gun Shy Dog
I have a one year old Springer/Beagle mix(spayed) who showed much promise as a gun dog from about eight weeks to 9 months, although her parents were not garunteed to be of hunting lines.
She now is noticably nervous around a gun, and not nearly as enthusiastic about birding, although she will sniff and explore for hours if allowed to go after what she wants (squirrels, crickets, etc...) as long as no gun is present.
When she doesn't hesitate to drive in on the flush and is very animated in her quest for birds, then begin having someone fire a cap load at a distance of 50-100 yards behind the handler while she is in the act of flushing.

 Install Gun Dog House Door
Your dog will learn to use your pet door almost at once, but there are a few which may be a little nervous at first.
When you install your dog door, make sure you measure the "rise" of your dog (the measurement from the floor to the lowest part of your dog's chest or stomach).
It is important that the dog gets used to the feel of the GDHD on the back of his head so once your dog has begun going through the door, let go of the GDHD so he feels it on his head and body as he goes through the door.

 Gun Dog Guidelines
Why, how and what to do when training a hunting dog are most operable within a framework of general rules; a philosophy, if you will, that outlines an overall approach in getting the job done.
They are seven positive rules to follow that will implement and make easier the application of the specific techniques by which dogs of the sporting breeds can be developed into useful gunning companions; the degree dependent upon what ancestral genes have given each dog and the skill and diligence of the individual trainer.
Some adults (wives) have asked me "how can you be so patient with kids and dogs but impatient with adults?" The answer is that I don't expect much from a child or a puppy; but once a human or canine has been exposed to learning and matured, unreasonableness or faulty performance is difficult to suffer.

Gun Dog Chat - Breeders Code of Silence
Some times as the article stated it takes generations for a problem to surface.I can only test the dogs that i have welped or come to me for breeding,i have no controll over the past generations, nor do i have controll over the pups unless i sell with a spay/nuter contract.
There are plenty of responsible breeders out there that do not deserve the general lumping in of the article, although i find it humorus that she mostly singles out the conformation people and judges as the biggest part of the code and the problem
We should all be aware that genetic defects abound in dogs - some breeds select for them, that is what makes the breed what it is. Ending the naivety would go a long way with breeders, buyers, and the author of this article.
