Gun politics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gun control advocates point out, however, that the degree of training Swiss receive in gun care and use, and the fact that the owners of these guns are known to the government, in and of itself constitutes a kind of gun control.
Gun control advocates excuse the intrusive imposition of a registration requirement by arguing that it is merely a reasonable precaution similar to the registration of privately-owned motor vehicles—the primary counterpoint being vehicle ownership's lack of explicit Constitutional protection.
John Lott, claim to have discovered a positive correlation between gun control legislation and crimes in which criminals confront citizens - that is, increases in the number or strictness of gun control laws are correlated with increases in the number or severity of violent crimes.

Gun politics in Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Australia has a long history of legitimate firearms use, predominantly for the purposes of agriculture, recreational hunting and pest control.
Historically, Australia has always had tough restrictions on handguns (requiring shooters to be members of registered gun clubs, and conducting extensive police checks on pistol shooters), whilst rifles and shotguns were considerably less restricted, with the only real restrictions on fully-automatic rifles and 'military style' weapons, once these became widely available from the early Eighties.
In Australia, firearm advocacy organisations have never approached the strength of the National Rifle Association in the United States and political sympathisers generally are quite discreet in their support.

Police even went door-to-door demanding that gun owners turn over their weapons, even though they had not been found guilty of committing any crime (other than that they were violating the "gun control" law), and many of the guns which were prohibited cost several hundred, or even thousands of dollars.
Further, the gun's serial number must still be readable, so as to identify that particular gun from all others of that make and model, and the ballistics characteristics of the gun cannot have changed very much from the time it was used in the crime.
Guns, which "gun control" supporters claim are "designed only to kill" were involved in about 1,400 accidental deaths in 1990, and an additional 18,800 suicides, and 13,600 murders, for a total of 33,800 firearm-related deaths.

Australia had long allowed television political advertising, with the bizarre proviso that there was an "electronic media cooling off period" for three days before the election in which the election was not permitted to be mentioned in any way on television or radio (be it in advertisements, news programs or any other context).
Politics is instead for a certain political class, and genteel bans on advertising and free air time given to established parties (and hence their chosen candidates) are a symptom of this.
And the right wing political parties, the Liberal Party in Australia, the Republican party in America, and others, are also the parties of the traditionally wealthy, who in the South one imagines meeting at the Augusta Country Club to discuss how to get the Bush admistration to protect their hereditory wealth for them.

Australian Gun Ban Proved Disastrous   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
In 1996, Australia adopted draconian gun control laws banning certain guns (60 percent of all firearms), requiring registration of all firearms and licensing of all gun owners.
Draconian gun legislation was passed in the heat of the moment because the fate of the nation was determined by a handful of statist socialists who find individual freedom abhorrent.
Consider the politics: There are three major parties in Australian politics: the center right (Liberal Party), the socialist camp (Labor Party) and the ultra-left (Australian Democratic Party) — this last one easily tilted the balance of power toward stringent gun control at the expense of freedom.

We in Australia do have a pro-gun lobby, the "Shooters Party", but it seems to me to be a pretty minor and fringe force in Australian politics, not at all like the NRA in the US.
The gun control advocates claim that all gun control laws and gun bans are extremely effective in reducing violent crime rates and very effective at preventing criminals from obtaining guns.
Gun rights advocates claim that gun control laws have not reduced violent crime rates and in fact often lead to more violent crime and all too often to government-sponsored exterminations and that such laws have no effect on the availbility of guns to criminals.

 John Howard - Psychology Central
The ban and an accompanying 'gun buy-back scheme' was popular with the general population but not with predominantly Coalition-voting gun owners.
A major change in Howard's political fortunes occurred in August and September 2001, when the government refused permission for the Norwegian freighter MV Tampa, carrying a group of asylum seekers picked up in international waters, to enter Australian waters.
Howard ordered the ship be boarded by the SAS and spoke strongly of the need for Australia to 'decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come'.

Reason magazine -- October 2000, Guns Down Under by Jacob Sullum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The ad, which can be viewed on the NRA’s Web site (www.nra.org), says that murders with guns, assaults with guns, armed robberies, and home invasions all increased after the Australian government confiscated about 660,000 privately owned firearms in 1996.
Defenders of gun control cite the 1998 decline in homicide as evidence that Australia’s policies are working, while opponents cite the two-year increases in other offenses as evidence that the government has encouraged criminals by disarming law-abiding citizens.
Homicides in Australia have been fluctuating since the late 1980s, and the upward trends in assaults, robberies, and unlawful entries began before 1996.

Gun Control Australia believes that new firearms legislation has not altered the number of guns in homes, 25 percent of which are estimated to contain at least one weapon.
Guns expedite this but they are not the sole nor the primary means of violence.

Perhaps the people who are moderating their forum have started to push their individual political agendas without the knowledge of the TLA people, but that is highly unlikely.
This is directly attributable to the LTTE call for a boycott of the presidential election by the Tamil people which translated into negligible polling by the people in the areas directly under their control, negligible polling in the north and low polling amongst the Tamil community in the east.
The use of violence and intimidation in the context of the presidential election is the most recent measure of the LTTE’s commitment to a negotiated political settlement of the ethnic conflict and of its willingness and ability to participate in a democratic process.
