Gun politics in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gun control advocates argue that only members of a "well regulated militia" have the right to keep and bear arms, with debate ensuing over what, exactly 'the militia' is. Opponents of gun control argue that the phrase "the people" applies to all individuals rather than an organized collective.
Gun control advocates answer that it is unrealistic to suppose that private citizens could oppose a government which controls the full power of the US Armed Forces, were it to become tyrannical.
Gun control advocates dispute these ideas, arguing that the US's two neighbors, Mexico and Canada are unlikely to ever invade, and that conquering tyrants have often required firearms ownership among their civilian populations (and, needless to say, their militaries).

Gun rights advocates point out that the court has made statements that refer to this right as an individual right, although these statements are found in cases unrelated to the Second Amendment.
Non-defensive uses of guns, such as hunting, varmint control and the sport of target shooting, are often lost in the debate despite being the most common reasons for private gun ownership.
Gun control advocates argue that high levels of gun ownership lead to higher levels of suicide and accidental deaths; gun ownership advocates dispute these statistics, for example pointing out that Japan, which allows virtually no private gun ownership, has one of the highest suicide rates in the world.

Gun rights advocates assert that since Miller was certainly not a member of any "government-controlled armed body", then (by the assertions of the gun control advocates) the Court's decision would have had no reason to mention anything further than his lack of militia membership to reject his claims of protection by the Second Amendment.
The complete lack of representation for the gun rights side of these issues in Court is probably due to Miller's murder, which had occurred long before the issue got through the appeals process.

The NRA is considered by many to be one of the most influential political lobbies in the USA because of its ability to consistently deliver large numbers of votes in elections, as well as its record of campaign contributions and activities in lobbying against gun control.
These laws range from the near-total ban on gun ownership in Washington, DC, to the outlawing of entire classes of firearms in many states as well as at the federal level, to the licensing of firearms owners in some jurisdictions.
Recently, the NRA worked to prevent the gun control lobby from re-authorizing the 1994 federal assault weapons ban, which banned many features of certain semi-automatic rifles and certain types of removable magazines (which hold the unfired cartridges).

 Bambooweb: Gun Politics
Gun politics (also known as gun rights or gun control) around the world tends to revolve around what degree of control should be enforced upon the private ownership and usage of firearms, and to what extent private ownership of firearms influences crime and the balance of power between the individual and the state.
Some scholars, notably John Lott, claim to have discovered a positive correlation between gun control legislation and crimes in which criminals confront citizens - that is, increases in the number or strictness of gun control laws are correlated with increases in the number or severity of violent crimes.
The efficacy of gun control legislation at reducing the availability of guns has been challenged by, among others, the testimony of criminals that they do not obey gun control laws, and by the lack of evidence of any efficacy of such laws in reducing violent crime.

For the level of danger that most firearms are characterized by such as caliber, rate of fire, muzzle velocity, accurate range, magazine capacity, etc., assault weapons are identical in function to just about any semi-automatic firearm.
The features banned by the law, however, were primarily superficial accessories, so when a weapon is banned as an assault weapon, the gun manufacturers complied with the law by removing the banned items, making the required superficial changes which render it legal again.

Politics: US Accomplice to Noriega's Crimes
The record that the U.S. prosecutor is certain to bring to light in Noriega's ongoing trial will show that his checkered history is punctuated by some pretty horrendous deeds, probably including such crimes as assassination, drug trafficking, bribery, money laundering and gun-running.
U.S. intelligence tracked and duly reported Noriega's activities even while the administration continued to pay his inordinate salary.
By standing back and allowing the activities of the hemisphere's most notorious criminal to go unchecked because he contributed to an illegal war patronized by the White House, the Reagan administration was surely as culpable as the criminal himself.

Not all leftwingers in the US are as frankly religious as Hillary Clinton, and many don't even realise that the ideas that they champion have deep religious roots.
And it strikes me that one reason why politics in the US have become so much more bitter over the past couple of decades is that two rather different threads of religiosity have come to dominate the two major parties in distinct fashion, where each party had previously incorporated major components of both.

The National Rifle Association argues that the ban violates the Constitution's 2nd Amendment.
