Specific to guns, if a gun is used in a crime, and that gun is recovered, you’re damn right I expect the authorities to try to find the gun’s owner — legal or not.
The equivilant of gun bans would be to require registration for the ownership of fast internet connections (which have a direct correlation to the chance of being used for software and music piracy).

The whole gun registration equals crime control argument rests heavily on the assumption that gun registration will apply to the guns of criminals as well as the guns of law-abiding citizens.
A gun registry has zero connection to guns that are not registered.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that criminals don't register their guns, and all the registry does is put stress on law abiding gun owners.
