GunValkyrie also incorporates some of the classic gaming elements of Bionic Commando as well as Nintendo's Metroid (such as the grappling hook that can be used to reach some of the higher levels).
GunValkyrie does an admirable job of capturing and paying homage to some of the great game play innovations from the past while bringing it to the year 2002.
GunValkyrie is an experience that you owe to your self to face and enjoy.

 Gunvalkyrie - GameCritics.com
While Gunvalkyrie allows full 3D movement, its style is most reminiscent of rail shooters such as Panzer Dragoon and Star Fox; each level consists of a linear mission (which is usually "destroy all enemies!"), and the levels—though often quite large and occasionally very open—are deliberately crafted to sustain the games feverish pace.
Gunvalkyrie challenges this perception by eschewing the conventions of its genre with a complex, unorthodox control scheme that radically shapes the direction of the game.
Gunvalkyrie shows that complexity can be both approachable and compelling, and that gamers are far from seeing the limits of its time-tested genre.

  Gamer's Logik 4.0 - Gunvalkyrie Review
Gunvalkyrie, originally slated for a release on the now-deceased Dreamcast, started life as a light gun game, but in the end it was changed to a 3rd person action shooter.
Gunvalkyrie was developed by Smilebit who is better known for their games Jet Grind Radio and Jet Set Radio Future games on the Dreamcast and Xbox respectively, so one can say that Smilebit has at least some familiarity with the Xbox hardware.
Gunvalkyrie sends two of its agents to go to Tir Na Nog and find out what has happened to the colonists; when they arrive, they find that the planet is overridden with huge alien insects (which seem to be the typical enemies for sci-fi action games).

As members of the GUNVALKYRIE organization, Kelly and Saburouta are members of Halley’s Chosen, and capable of wielding the Gearskin, a powerful piece of battle armor with advanced flight and weapon technology.
Guided by the advice of Dr. Meridian Poe, the child of Dr. Hebble Gate, Poe is on her own quest to find Gate, as her father left her five years previously by decapitating her, using her head as the core for a new technological computer/life-support system, and then stealing her body for his own uses.

 G4 - Feature - 'GunValkyrie' (Xbox) Review
Anyone who has kept an eye on "GunValkyrie" since its early 2001 unveiling knew that this would be a promising Sega release, and one that displayed the company's potential to develop for a non-Sega console.
Its sleek look, sexy female lead, and futuristic presentation even led journalists to describe "GunValkyrie" as (gasp!) "The next 'Metroid'." Yet as the game came closer to its release date, word went around that the game's controls were complicated and unmanageable.
Much of the character movements are meant to be performed in mid-air (by use of a boost), and at the same time you're expected to survive against all sorts of insects, monsters, sentries, and larger-than-life bosses.

The Next Level - Game Review - GUNVALKYRIE
It's rare to see a game whose intention is specifically set to challenge; specifically when it comes matching the gaming needs for the most seasoned gamer.
GUNVALKYRIE can best be described as an intense, "see all, kill all" action game.
My only complaint with GUNVALKYRIE is that the levels are not entirely consistent with each other and lack an equal degree of genius design.

Smilebit obviously left out a few crucial genes, because most gamers will find their onscreen character spurting and fitting, boosting in wrong directions at wrong times, banging into the lips of ledges that need to be landed upon, and otherwise conniption-fitting about the screen.
The "boost" jets of a Gunvalkyrie operative's suit work much like the boost jets of Sega's Virtual On games, blasting the character at jet-propelled speed in one single straight-line direction at a time.
It's worth a rental for most gamers, and the few, the 1337, the proud and extremely dexterous, will find in Gunvalkyrie's briar patch a game that meets and rewards their mad skills in spades while the rest of us pick the nettles from our stinging backsides.

As either one of GUNVALKYRIE’s members, Kelly O’Lenmey or Saburouta Mishima, your mission is to infiltrate Tir na Nog, attempt to locate Dr. Hebble’s whereabouts, and destroy anything that has more than 2 legs.
And if you need added incentive, GUNVALKYRIE is worth playing through just to face the final boss, for it is one of the most intense battles in the history of video games.

PlanetXbox - A Member of the GameSpy Network
Fortunately, with Smilebit's reputation at stake among a group of gamers who may have never had the pleasure of experiencing their previous games, one would imagine that this is but a temporary problem, and certainly one that will be cleared up well before the game is released.
Speaking of releases, it was initially rumored that Gunvalkyrie would be ready to go in time to be one of the Xbox's early titles.
Information released since indicates that Smilebit is seriously considering making at least some elements of Gunvalkyrie online-playable, which has the two-fold effect of not only delaying the game (probably until early 2002), but also potentially making it one of the first Xbox games to take advantage of the built-in broadband modem that the system boasts.

 IGN: GUNVALKYRIE Review
The control system in GUNVALKYRIE is going to be the main barrier between those who like the game and those who don't.
The use of the dual analog sticks isn't as simple as "move with the left" and "aim with the right." If you think of how a human actually moves, the left stick controls Kelly's body while the right stick controls the aim of her weapon.
She has to be facing whatever it is you want her to shoot at, but the right analog is better at fine tuning her aim and working with the game's automatic lock-on system once she's facing the right way.
