The Gunbarrel Highway is without a doubt one of the most famous tracks in Australia.
The Gunbarrel as it is loosely defined nowadays runs from Wiluna to the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and includes part of the Great Central Road, the Heather Highway and the connecting road from Wiluna, West of Carnegie Station.
Although this stretch of 350 kilometers was not part of the old Gunbarrel, it is now generally considered to form an integral part of a Gunbarrel Highway trip.

It's a highway I had planned to travel in a 2WD vehicle and eventually thought better of it.
The only part of the highway that can remotely lend itself to the name highway would be the section from Wiluna in Western Australia through to Carnegie Station (344km in length).

The Gunbarrel Highway takes its name from the 'Gunbarrel Road Construction Party' which, under the leadership of famous surveyor, the late Len Beadell, built a network of desert highways to service Woomera and the Giles meteorological station.
Of these highways, the Gunbarrel (Wiluna to Docker River) and the Great Central Road (Laverton to Warburton) are the most well-known and used.
Nowadays, it's impossible to drive the entire length of the original Gunbarrel Highway because some sections of it have been abandoned and other sections pass through Aboriginal land with restricted access.

The first mention of Gunbarrel actually dates from more than a century ago, in the 1860s.
With their horse-drawn wagon, they pulled onto a high point on the plains (now known as Gunbarrel Hill) where they could look to the east and see the large tree.

The "Gunbarrel Highway" is an isolated desert track of 1400km from Wiluna to Yulara (via Jackie Junction and Docker River).
You can pick up the Gunbarrel from either Wiluna in the west, or Giles (Warakurna Roadhouse) in the east and so it is usually done as an extension/beginning of a Canning Stock Route, West McDonald Ranges or Tanami trek.
This is the "abandoned section" of the Gunbarrel and conditions deteriorate at this junction.

This piece of road was constructed by the Gunbarrel Road Construction Party in 1963, and was the second to last road made before the ending of the road project.
At around the same time my 50 miles west of Giles replica on the old Gunbarrel Highway was stolen and I must say that I began to wonder if I was beating my head against a brick wall by trying to keep these pieces of history alive.
The old Gunbarrel from the Patjarr turnoff to Warakurna is good barring some rocky creek crossings, but has also suffered some fires (our 70 miles west of Giles plaque had the narrowest escape).
