In the Gundog bench show, Beagles are examined individually on the bench and receive a score (using the 100 point scale published in the Standard) which reflects how closely they conform to the breed Standard of perfection.

Gundogs are so called as they have been developed — through breeding — to find live game and then to retrieve game that has been shot.
Generally they are the most intelligent of dogs and their calm temperament makes them ideally suited to family pets — a Gundog makes a very loyal companion.
All Gundogs require daily exercise and anyone thinking of welcoming any of the Gundog breeds into their home should be aware that this is a commitment for a minimum of an hour's walk for life — dogs don't understand when it's raining, cold or you're just tired.

DogWeb - UK Gundog Group Introduction
Gundogs are descended from the hunting dogs of the Middle Ages.
Today's setters are superb gundogs which will find game by pointing or setting, flush on command and, in some cases, retrieve as they used to do over a hundred years ago.
They are seldom happier than when trained to carry out these tasks; not only are they able to use their capabilities to the full, but in return they receive the human companionship which they so desire.

 Gundog Training
The Gundog Program is a minimum 4 month program designed to teach basic obedience commands (heel, sit, stay, come, down, no) as well as hold and fetch.
Month-to-month gundog training is billed at a rate of $575.00/mo + birds, and pro-rated daily training is $25.00/day + birds.
Working gundogs must have live birds to be properly trained, therefore we generally shoot 2 - 4 live birds each month for dogs working on marking skills, and dogs working on upland work can expect 20 - 30 birds per month.

 Gundog Training Dummy Launcher
The launcher, which uses small.22 blanks, enables you to throw dummies far farther than can be done by hand.
It has the added advantage of getting the puppy accustomed to the sound of gunshot and, if used in accordance with the Gundog Training Broadsheets, will help to avoid the problems of a gun shy dog.
For maximum effectiveness, use the launcher with three dummies so that you can incorporate the launcher into your directional control exercises - one dummy to either side and one behind the dog.

 Basic Principles of Gundog Training
The information on this page is taken from "Gundog Training Broadsheets" by Eric Begbie and describes the essential principles of gundog training.
For example, if the dog has been commanded to "stay" and, after a few minutes, it wanders for a yard or two, then it must be taken back to the stay position and again commanded to stay.
With little "extra" exercises of that sort, however, do be sure to avoid falling into the predictability-trap by varying the length of time you make him sit or the distance you walk away before calling him.
