DVD Verdict Review - Gung Ho
Gung Ho is an enjoyable enough '80s movie, though much like the Thompson Twins and high hair, it hasn't aged very gracefully.
Fun Fact: Gung Ho was apparently a big enough hit at the box office to warrant a short-lived TV series starring Scott Bakula and returning Gung Ho stars Gedde Watanabe and Clint Howard (brother of Ron).
Gung Ho is presented in a fine 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer.

 1/23/01: Cliff Martinez Traffic
When we first discussed the concept for the score, it almost seemed like he wanted a score that might be just as well suited to a sound designer as it would a composer." Martinez adds that he wasn't very gung-ho about the idea.
"Traffic was a lot of fun because I got such a kick out of the idea that this was a $50 million picture and it (has) music that was certainly nothing all that unique or all that original, but for a film like this that's cast like this, it is," says Martinez.
Martinez adds that although the backbone of the score for Traffic is the guitar of David Torn, there's not a lot of material that's recognizable as a guitar.

 Platoon
The real war in Platoon is not between the USA and Vietnam, but between the two factions inside the American platoon, the gung-ho Berenger boys versus the stoners who follow the path of Dafoe.
Films under five are generally awful even if you like that kind of film, equivalent to about one and a half stars from the critics or less, depending on just how far below five the rating is.
Platoon was widely acclaimed at the time, and made an excellent Oscar showing in 1986.

Jarhead Movie Review at Hollywood Video
The film's acting is solid in general, particularly from Peter Sarsgaard as fellow (and more gung-ho) Marine Troy, and Jamie Foxx as their strict staff sergeant.
Though Jarhead isn't exactly an anti-war film, it doesn't fly its flag too high either, if at all.
With his work in the recent Proof, this film, and the upcoming Brokeback Mountain, 2005 is something of a trifecta for the young star.

 Armageddon (1998): Reviews
Bay directs Armageddon in a way that seems more concerned with constantly assaulting the senses than anything else, hoping perhaps that the quick cuts and constant explosions will distract from his film's many flaws.
The actors mark time, and the gung-ho heroics on display are embarrassingly hollow.

Even though the film adaptation of the wonderful, marionette-driven cult classic Thunderbirds kind of missed the point by turning it into a live action Spy Kids wannabe, at least Hans Zimmer's score pays homage to the original show's brassy, fearless sound.
Even so, the gung-ho feel of "Can't Wait to Be a Thunderbird," "Junior Mission," and "Thunderize!" has plenty of adrenaline-laced appeal.

FILM REVIEW -- German Film Takes Harsh View of War
Two of the men, an idealistic young lieutenant named Hans (Thomas Kreischmann) and a gung-ho noncom named Rollo (Jochen Nickel), soon are part of a herd of troops dispatched to Russia to fight in what was to become a decisive World War II battle, and the first major defeat for Hitler's Third Reich.
This grimly beautiful film is filled with disturbing scenes of human destruction as the small German platoon that is the movie's focus slowly fights its way through catacomb-like settings of industrial rubble.
As grim a depiction of war as we're likely to find in the movies, the stunning and depressing new film ``Stalingrad'' presents a point-blank look at one of the bloodiest battles of World War II -- from a German army vantage point.

Battleground (1949 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This film was notable for being the first post-World War II film to portray American soldiers as vulnerable and human, as opposed to inspirational and gung-ho.
Battleground is a 1949 war film which tells the story of a squad of the 101st Airborne Division trying to cope during the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne, Belgium.
While there is no question concerning the courage and steadfastedness of the members of the squad, they each have at least one moment in the film where they seriously consider running away, or scheme to get sent away from the front line, or vocally complain about being in the situation they are in.

Eric the Unread: Jarhead - another pro-war film?
In fact, Russian war films in general tend to be noticeably less gung-ho than their Hollywood equivalents - almost certainly because they were made for people with far more direct experience of the sharp end of mechanised warfare, and who were therefore not especially disposed to treat the subject lightly.
Sam Mendes has directed the film adaptation, and first glances at the trailer suggest a film perhaps playing more on the Iraq-based parts of the story, although a few micro-second clips of home-life make me think the trailer could be focusing on the more testosterone loaded parts of the book to attract the right audience.
There is talk that many Vietnam films are antiwar, that the message is war is inhumane and look what happens when you train young American men to fight and kill, they turn their fighting and killing everywhere, they ignore their targets and desecrate the entire country, shooting fully automatic, forgetting they were trained to aim.

Another film attempting to cash in on the gung-ho patriotism of the United States, We Were Soldiers, the Mel Gibson starrer directed by the dubious Randall Wallace (he of The Man In The Iron Mask "fame"), was received with tepid critical reaction and middling box office results.
The silent film has not been seen in public for decades because its original score was lost, but thanks to TCM's annual Young Film Composers Competition, it has received a new score and a new life.
The film opens with a battle and is underscored with contemporary music, which is perhaps the music's low point.

 GameSpy: Starship Troopers Review
On one level, the movie was a wry send-up of gung-ho militarism and fascism.
The game's main catch is supposed to be that it throws dozens and dozens of bugs at you at once, yet Starship Troopers rarely manages to create even a modicum of excitement or terror from the huge hordes of foes it drops on you.
The problem is that the twelve levels of Starship Troopers are mostly a snooze; a few fun moments are overwhelmed by endless repetition and tired design ideas.

Inevitably the two rebels clash with their parents, inspiring support from their mothers (splendid perfomrances from Cassidy and Hartley) and hostility from Scott's gung-ho father (played with conviction by Dern).
The film effectively recreates the fear and defiance which accompanied Nixon's support of the draft lottery, with 19-year-olds designated as the first for the slaughter.
Thompson's evocation of the spirit of the '60s protest is most moving when it abandons the soapbox and concentrates on domestic discord.

The film follows a college student and his slacker cousin, a Sikh convenience store owner struggling to balance a traditional Punjabi mom and an American girlfriend, and a gung-ho National Guardsman in three separate storylines over 72 hours.
The students in the film are real Stanford seniors who moved in together for six weeks of workshopping before a 12-day August shoot at spots like San Francisco’s Exploratorium and Palace of Fine Arts, and at a beach down the coast.

 Behind Enemy Lines (2001)
My dislike of the film is moderate - and confused - enough that I can at least recommend a rental for those who enjoy loud gung-ho flicks.
Of course, in a film such as Behind Enemy Lines, someone who might actually care about an absence of war must be seen as a coward, a weasel, or a cowardly weasel.
The film shows some restraint in that it leaves Piquet as a weasel and doesn’t imbue him with any cowardly tones.

DVD Verdict Review - Battle Of The Bulge
The film was made in 1965, at a time when most war films were rousing bouts of heroics and gung-ho nationalism.
The film's audio elements have also been remastered, providing a 5.1 surround track that packs a significant punch—separation effects are plentiful, and all those explosions and gunfire give the subwoofer a healthy workout.
The film is presented in an aspect ratio of 2.55:1 (Cinerama!), and has been enhanced for 16 x 9 playback (warning to those without widescreen televisions, however—those black bars at the top and bottom are going to take up the majority of the screen.

 The Last Castle
Regarding "The Last Castle," our film critic writes, "DreamWorks might be nervous about a movie concerning what amounts to a military mutiny coming out in the current climate, but thematically, the film is as gung-ho as a John Wayne war movie."
The film might have indulged in some ambivalence in the Irwin vs. Winter duel; it might have toyed, say, with the notion that a prison command is totally unlike a battlefield command, and not every tactic employed by Winter is dead wrong.
While "The Last Castle" is about an inmate revolt in a U.S. military prison, it's hard to imagine a more pro-military movie coming out of Hollywood.

Verhoeven's film is, and this cannot be stressed enough for the hard of thinking, a SATIRE.
But it's never better than when people attempt to speak the truth of the situation, and are drowned out by the gung-ho nonsense from the main cast.
But before we get to that, it's time for a quick check that everyone's in line when it comes to the film this FPS is based upon.

Mandel and Ganz met in a Hollywood comedy club while the former was working as a joke writer and the latter was working as a staff writer on "The Odd Couple." Both transplanted writers from New York who idolized Billy Wilder, they quickly became good friends.

Henry V Film Review - Time Out Film
Quibbles apart, Branagh succeeds in his blunt, robust portrayl of the Soldier-King, hauling the film along in the wake of his own gung-ho performance.
Most of the scenes, including exteriors, could have been filmed on the stage of the National, and devices like Jacobi's Chorus, in anachronistic black greatcoat and woolly scarf, serve to accentuate the theatricality of the enterprise, as does the fact that Hal appears to be attacking France with 25 men.

Hippy's Happy Film Reviews - The Thin Red Line
The trailers for The Thin Red Line failed to inspire; it looked like it was to be a Gung Ho movie padded with slushy sentimentality, a regurgitation of every other war film.
Malick's previous films were not box office successes, nor did he gain any awards for his efforts, but they were critically acclaimed by those who did go and see them.
The saving feature of the film was its dream-like quality, so powerful that a friend I went with had to be woken up, two hours in, when the onset of snoring was threatening to upset other members of the audience.
