This very promising Swedish driver developed into one of the most talented drivers on the British Formula 3 scene during the mid-1970s and was promoted into the Lotus Grand Prix team at the start of 1976 as part of a deal which saw Colin Chapman release Ronnie Peterson to return to the March F1 team.
Nilsson proved a willing apprentice, eager to learn the ropes from team leader Mario Andretti with whom he was paired through to the end of the 1977 season.
He lingered until the autumn before succumbing to the disease, by which time he had given great impetus to the Gunnar Nilsson Cancer Treatment Campaign which was supported in his memory by many members of the motor sporting fraternity.
