Gunnedah calls itself 'Town of My Country', a reference to poet Dorothea MacKellar (1885-1968) who spent a great deal of time on a local property from 1905 (the year she wrote her best-known work, 'My Country', which is thought to have been inspired, in part, by the local terrain) until the late 1930s.
The wildlife park is 7 km west of Gunnedah on the Mullaley Rd (the Oxley Highway).

On 15 August 1919, a group of thirteen Sisters from Emmaville Convent of Mercy, established in 1885 and from which one branch house was opened in Deepwater in 1914, amalgamated with the Gunnedah to become one of the eight Provinces of the Australian Union of the Sisters of Mercy.
Initially, members of the Gunnedah Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy were engaged in the ministry of education in primary and secondary schools and the visitation of "the poor, sick and ignorant", as expressed in the fourth vow of the Sisters of Mercy.
In 1997 the Gunnedah Sisters of Mercy are launching their associates in Mercy programme which invites people who have experienced a call to share in, and contribute to, the life and corporate mission of the Mercy community to establish a formal association with the Sisters of Mercy as Associates in Mercy.

For many years it was believed that Rugby commenced in Gunnedah in 1891, and a Gala Function was held in 1991 to celebrate the Club's centenary.
In researching the origins of Rugby in Gunnedah for his history of the Club, Don McDonagh discovered that the Club was actually founded in 1883 by Messrs Willsallen and Iredale, at a meeting held at Hurley's Hotel, on the motion of Mr Bacon.
In 1979 the Gunnedah Rugby Club purchased 38.36 acres (15.52 ha) on the Wandobah Road and began construction of their own home ground.

Vicki Doubleday of the Gunnedah Environment Group said, "Local councils throughout country NSW, such as Barraba, Coolah, Mudgee and Gunnedah were opposed to the EIS on the grounds that it failed to meet the concerns of the local rural community."
The Gunnedah Environment Group is just one of a new network of concerned citizens in country NSW which have held meetings in towns like Tamworth, Gunnedah, Coonabarabran, Bathurst, Mudgee, Cowra and Katoomba this year.
