Gunnera is a dramatic plant, and one which amazes visitors with small gardens.
I found my original gunnera plant at the edge of the water race, dug it out, and transplanted it to the edge of the irrigation pond.
Interesting that I have several newly arrived Gunneras which have self seeded on the banks of the water race near Middle Bridge.

if the walnut was a fl walnut (as oppossed to the common english walnut) your gunnera may have been having problems with toxic materials naturally secreted by the fl walnut which is a natural way of getting rid of competing vegetation.
some plants are more susceptable than others, am not sure of gunnera's status in that respect.

Last year the gunnera barely survived because they need shade and the idiot neighbors chopped down a big pine that was shading it, so the sun scorched it but it still had 2 leaves that survived.

While a bank covered with gunnera here is not impossible, I wonder if that is really what they are.
I left out fuki (Petasites japonicus), this spreader is more likely to be mistaken for gunnera due to the large broad leaf and could easily cover a damp bank in time.

We recently rescued a Gunnera that had been on a hillside without enough water for several years.
First I tried in a Big pot with lots of water; (this time the bulb was quite big; that of a big elephant-ear tuber) the young leaves sprouted, but promptly turned fl and withered.
