Some time ago I saw a picture of Gunnera in your garden and by the looks of it I thought it may be tinctoria (going by one that I had seen at Heronswood Nursery).
almost all the gunnera at the park are the "standard" gunnera chilensis/tinctoria---there is only one clump of g.
in my experience, the most common gunnera in the trade is tinctoria/chilensis---like many nursery plants confused naming is common---manicata will end up with bigger and flatter leaves (under ideal conditions) with out the "frilled" margins of the chilean species.

We are currently trying to assess the weed potential of Gunnera manicata in New Zealand.
Gunnera tinctoria is already widespread and behaving badly (and in fact is not allowed to be propagated, distributed, or sold), but we have no real evidence that G. manicata will also be a problem.
Gunnera has been promoted as dramatic garden plant, so in future, the less widely distributed G. manicata is likely to be used as an alternative to G. tinctoria, because they look very similar.

Gunnera likes acid soil and the lime killed it completely in less than a week even though I didn't put lime directly on the gunnera planting area.
I have 1 small (2.5 ft x 3 ft) gunnera manicata planted on Sept 11th (easy to remember date) 3 larger leaves died off, and several more have started..including 1 dense hearty one from the crown.
I planted both of theses new Gunneras in a heavily ammended with steer manure, well-draining 4' by 4' pit which is mounded up a couple feet in the middle.

I would favour Gunnera manicata because the stems are right and many of the appropriate leaf characterise are present.
The original question of it being a subspecies of manicata or another gunnera is the most pertinent question to ask.
The cup-shaped characteristics of Gunnera manicata's leaves would be associated more with young leaves, rather than older ones in late season.

Gunnera magellanica (zones 8-9) "Dwarf Gunnera" A matt forming ground cover (although not particularly invasive, as a lot of ground covers can be) getting 3-6 inches tall with kidney shaped leaves up to 3.5 inches across.
While it is best to plant Gunneras in moist places I have seen people succeed with heavy irrigation.

I am not sure whether these are Gunnera manicata or Gunnera tinctoria, they are seedlings from a plant that I bought at a local nursery.
The original plant was killed a couple of years ago when we had an unexpected freeze in March after a very warm February.
