Master Gunnery Sergeant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt) is the ninth and highest enlisted rank (along with the grade-equivalent ranks of Sergeant Major and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps) in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Master Gunnery Sergeants are sometimes referred to by the nickname "Master Guns" or "Master Gunny." These nicknames are unacceptable in formal or ceremonial situations, and, at the rank holder's discretion, may also be unacceptable for use by lower-ranking Marines.
In their annual performance evaluations, called "proficiency reports," eligible Gunnery Sergeants indicate whether they wish to be considered for promotion to Master Sergeant or First Sergeant, and thus whether they enter the promotional track for Master Gunnery Sergeant or Sergeant Major.

The Gunnery Pocket Book - Part 1
The Gunnery Branch is responsible for the high standard of drill required to work the gunnery armament which is reflected in the general smartness and spontaneous reaction to words of command, so that it plays an important part in a man's career from the time that he joins the Royal Navy.
Gunnery training classes are held whenever possible at sea, and any man wishing to improve his position or knowledge should put his name into the Gunnery Office, as a volunteer for the next course.
But it must be realised that success in the gunnery branch, as in any other department, must largely depend on a man's own efforts; and that in war-time, when the time allowed for instruction is reduced to a minimum, the most careful attention to the instruction that he is given is absolutely essential.

 Battlefleet 1915 Gunnery & Torpedoes
Players begin the gunnery phase by establishing targets for each of their vessels and then visually estimating the distance from those vessels to their targets.
Each target must be recorded separately by name on the gunnery log, along with the gun types assigned to that target and one range estimate for that target (each vessel may only make one range estimate per targeted ship per turn).
If the estimated range does not land on any part of the target base, the rounds for that turn are considered too far away to have a chance of hitting, and a white "splash" marker is placed at the incorrectly guessed range point.

Though war-gaming is a popular (and sometimes historically useful) research method, few of the algorithms used to estimate the effectiveness of naval gunfire have been based upon official findings, and virtually none have based their conclusions upon the analysis of systematic testing.
Not surprisingly, testing and evaluating their gunnery was considered a high priority, and the U.S. Navy, like most of its rivals, conducted gunnery practices at least once a year.
The schedule of gunnery exercises to be fired in any given year was selected from a master list according to the priorities of the time, Policy dictated that every active ship in the fleet participate in at least some basic gunnery exercises every year.
