The storyline of Gunstar Heroes is rather anime-ish in its tone, which isn't such a big deal nowadays, but in 1993 wasn't quite so common.

Even Gunstar Heroes is showing its age a little, proving too simplistic in both design and game play while also lacking the longevity of other shooters many years its elder such as Midway’s equally influential Smash TV.
However, with the exception of Gunstar Heroes, this option does more harm than good showing off some patchy design work on Treasure’s part, though this is a very small issue and will only annoy a minority of players.

You'd think in that the 10+ years it's been since the original Gunstar Heroes was released few would remember the game, and upon mention, offer a nostalgic tale thick with adolesence and mass consumption of carbonated beverages whilst trying to beat the game late at night, awash in the light emitting from the television screen.

Super Heroes retains its predecessor's sense of openness: Once you complete the first level and set up the somewhat vague plot, you're free to move in any order through the next four levels to capture the Treasure Gems and prevent the revival of Golden Silver, the Ultimate Destroyer.
Incredible and varied though Super Heroes may be, fans will likely be disappointed by the absence of the original Heroes' weapon fusion system that allowed players to combine two different weapon types into a customized gun.
Instead, the heroes can freely toggle between three different weapons (rapid-fire weapon, flamethrower and homing laser) at all times, not unlike the way things were set up in Contra: Shattered Soldier.
