Edmund Gunter (1581 - December 10, 1626), English mathematician, of Welsh extraction, was born in Hertfordshire in 1581.
There is reason to believe that Gunter was the first to discover (in 1622 or 1625) that the magnetic needle does not retain the same declination in the same place at all times.
Generally called by seamen, the "Gunter," this is a large plane scale, usually 2 feet long by about 1 1/2 inches broad (600 mm by 40 mm), and engraved with various lines of numbers.

Gunter is at the intersection of State Highway 289 and Farm Road 121, twelve miles southwest of Sherman in south central Grayson County.
One of the later towns to be established in Grayson County, Gunter received a post office in 1898 and was organized as a community in 1902 when the tracks of the St. Louis, San Francisco and Texas Railway reached the area.
The town's namesake, John Gunter, a cattleman and surveyor, donated land for the townsite.

Lillian Gunter, pioneer county librarian and architect of the County Free Library Law of Texas, was born at Sivells Bend, Texas, on September 15, 1870, to Addison Yancey and Elizabeth (Ligon) Gunter.
Her determination overcame defeat and frustration from delays, led to an awareness that the first county-library law was weak and unworkable, and brought about a new law, passed in 1917.
The Cooke County Library, which Gunter founded in 1920 and directed until her death, was the second such system established under the new law (Dallam County having founded the first only a few months earlier), but the first established by petition.
