The nearby town of Guntersville is named for John Gunter, an early Scottish settler and adopted member of the Cherokee tribe, who established the town the year after the end of the American Revolution.
When TVA established the stairway of dams and locks that turned the Tennessee into a 652-mile-long river highway, the rural town of Guntersville was transformed into a major port.
Guntersville Dam is 94 feet high and stretches 3,979 feet across the Tennessee River.

 Tennessee HISTORY
TVA began construction of the dam in December 1935 and it was completed in January 1939.
Most of the flow into Guntersville Lake is released from Nikcajack Dam in Tennessee (approximately 37,200 cubic feet per second cfs), with an additional 4,600 cfs generated by tributaries into the reservoir.
Wheeler Dam was the very first project taken on by the Tennessee Valley Authority just six months after Franklin D Roosevelt created the organization in 1933.

Stretching approximately 55 miles between the dams, Guntersville has a surface area of nearly 70,000 acres and is complemented by numerous large feeder creeks and vast expanses of backwater flats.
There are three distinct ways to fish this lower half of Guntersville: the milfoil beds and ledges in the back of the creeks and behind the river channel; the edges of the creek channels; and, the edge of the old river channel, itself.

We were on our way to the Huntsville Hamfest for the first time (by the wrong route, but that's another story!) when we drove by the sign for the development.
Guntersville has 2 locks: the original 60x360 foot lock built with the dam, and the newer 110x600 foot, opened in 1965.

– TVA will renovate the Guntersville Dam boat launching ramp this winter to improve safety and boater access to the reservoir.
The boat ramp, which is located below the dam on the south side of the river, will remain open until January, when it will be closed for approximately three months to complete the project.
When the ramp is closed, boaters can access the reservoir downstream of the dam on the north side of the river about 15 miles away.
