Guntur District is home to the oldest evidence of humans in India, in the form of Palaeolithic (old stone age) implements.
Guntur was brought under control of the British East India Company by 1788, and became a district of Madras Presidency.
Some places of historical importance in Guntur District are Amaravathi, Bhattiprolu, the Undavalli caves and the archeological museum in Guntur.

HYDERABAD: Twenty-two people, including 10 women and seven girls, were injured when a country-made bomb exploded at a religious congregation at Machilipatnam, 100 km from Vijayawada in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday night, police said.
The condition of three injured women is stated to be serious and they were shifted to Government General Hospital at Guntur, police added.
