Guobiao is usually displayed using simplified characters and Big5 is usually displayed using traditional characters.
There is however no mandated connection between the encoding system and the font used to display the characters, though font and encoding are always tied together for practical reasons.

About 7000 characters are available in the standard GB set, but extensions include additional characters, including all of those in the B5 set.

Beijing University Professor Jiao Guobiao caused angst among Chinese politicians this spring, when he wrote a scathing condemnation of censorship in China in a piece whose influence grew rapidly, as users disseminated it on the Internet.
The piece is sarcastic in tone, and UCLA political science Professor Richard Baum, principal organizer of today's speech, said Jiao has become a hero among elements of Chinese society opposed to restrictions on the press.
"Jiao Guobiao has become something of a cause celeb in China, because he stood up to the propaganda authorities who censor the media," Baum said.

Files ending in.gb are expected to be GuoBiao coded, those ending in.b5 are regarded as Big5 coded and files ending in.u8 must be UTF-8 encoded.
Unicode dictionary files are always read in at startup and their entries are available in both GuoBiao and Big5 mode of KCDict.

On March 20, Jiao spoke to his family in Beijing and was told that Beijing University has informed them that Jiao has been delisted from the university on the basis of "voluntary departure." Jiao said, "I have not received the official decision from the university.
The case should have been simple: there was not a reason in the world to assign a journalism professor to study ancient Chinese texts, unless it was for political expediency.

In batch-mode you type in all the PinYin first, then with command pig-region, which is bound to key sequence M-$ by default or pig-buffer you convert all of them into GuoBiao.
Personally I think this is faster, and because of less distraction user can concentrate more on the contents.
