Buddhism was probably introduced in the 2nd century although traditionally its introduction is credited to the first visit of Guru Rimpoche in the 8th century.
Guru Rimpoche is the most important figure in Bhutan's history, regarded as the second Buddha.
His miraculous powers included the ability to subdue demons and evil spirits, and he preserved his teachings and wisdom by concealing them in the form of terma (hidden treasures) to be found later by enlightened treasure discoverers known as tertons.

While the original thought was to install a statue of Lord Buddha, it was later decided to erect one of Guru Rimpoche given that the saint had visited and meditated in Sikkim and is revered and worshipped by all here.
The Rimpoche said that the construction of the statue would greatly benefit the state as Sikkim is a holy land where pilgrimage centers with hidden treasures, including Mt. Kangchendzonga and the four sacred caves blessed and consecrated by Guru Rimpoche, exist.
Guru Padmasambhava’s contribution to the birth of Buddhism in Sikkim can be traced to the eighth century when he personally visited and blessed Sikkim.

Trungpa Rimpoche would have remained molded in the established feudal and ritualistic framework of Tibetan Buddhism, but for the total disruption of his formal education at the age of 19 due to the Chinese Communist invasion of his homeland.
It was Trungpa Tulku's love for his guru that carried him through all the years of extreme hardship and loneliness which were to follow him for the rest of his life.

He was judged to be the immediate reincarnation of Longchen Rabjampa and ultimately an incarnation of Guru Rimpoche, founder of Tibetan Buddhism.
Guru Rimpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, prophesied that Pema Lingpa would recover 108 sacred texts (termas) although due to adverse circumstances the actual number was limited to 32.
The most famous story of Pema Lingpa tells of his diving with a lighted butter lamp into Membartsho, the so-called flaming lake in the Bumthang district of Bhutan (actually a deep pool in a river).

The Guru (Guru Nanak) hit the perpetually snow-covered Guru Dongmar lake with his stick to provide water to the graziers.
