The temple is famous as a site for pilgrimage and also a Cultural centre as it is one of the centre-points along which Kerala literature and art-forms have been developed.

Recently in a statement, the temple authorities said that people of Buddhist and Jain faiths are allowed entry, since they are treated on par with Hinduism.
Guruvayoor should be compared with St. Peters Cathedral; unless, of course, Rajeev is implying that Guruvayoor is also a "private" temple of its priests ;).
It is upto the temple authorities to decide on criterion of admission and in my opinion, they are well within their rights to do whatever they please.
