 UK CHANCELLOR ANNOUNCES MAJOR REVIEW OF UK TAX AUTHORITIES
The review will report to Treasury Ministers and be chaired by Gus O'Donnell, Permanent Secretary to the Treasury working with the revenue departments and their Chairmen.

 Secretary of the Cabinet and Head of The Home Civil Service
The Prime Minister has approved the appointment of Sir Gus O' Donnell, currently Permanent Secretary at HM Treasury, to be Secretary of the Cabinet in succession to Sir Andrew Turnbull KCB CVO on his retirement this summer.
Sir Gus joined the Treasury as an economist in 1979, having spent four years as an economics lecturer at the University of Glasgow.
In March 2004 his review of the framework for tax policy and administration in the UK led to the Chancellor's announcement of the integration of the Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise to form HM Revenue and Customs.

Gordon Brown's right-hand man at the Treasury, Gus O'Donnell, is to be promoted by Tony Blair to the post of Cabinet Secretary and head of the Home Civil Service if Labour wins the election.
Government insiders said yesterday that Mr O'Donnell, who has been the permanent secretary at the Treasury since 2002 and is a former press secretary to John Major, was the perfect "non-partisan" figure to oversee a handover of power between Labour prime ministers at No 10.
A few months ago, when relations between Mr Blair and Mr Brown were at their worst, some in Whitehall believed that the Prime Minister might resist appointing an official from the Treasury, his rival's power base, to Whitehall's most powerful and sought-after job.

The Prime Minister had agreed the shortlist, as recommended by Sir Andrew, which was Sir Nigel Crisp from the Department of Health, Sir John Gieve from the Home Office, Sir David Normington from the Department for Education and Sir Gus O'Donnell from the Treasury.
The Prime Minister's Spokesman (PMOS) announced to journalists that Sir Gus O'Donnell had been appointed as Cabinet Secretary, following an internal competition, handled on the advice of Sir Andrew Turnbull, as well as input, as was normal from the first Civil Service Commissioner.
Asked if Sir Gus's role would be the same as Sir Andrew's role, the PMOS said he was not aware of any planned changes, but Sir Gus and the Prime Minister would talk about the precise role that Sir Gus would play.

The government’s ability to deliver public services is dependent on the success of the voluntary and community sector, Gus O&, cabinet secretary and head of the Home Civil Service has told charity chairs and chief executives.
