Weyhing has a weakness for fine pigeons; in fact, is quite a pigeon fancier, and this fact makes the charge appear plausible.
Weyhing has in the past been in trouble through indiscretion, but nothing more serious than conviviality, and consequent excesses, was ever charged against him.
It appears that Weyhing was either cleared of the charges, or found guilty and took care of the matter before the 1892 season commenced.

Weyhing was yet another 1890s pitcher who apparently had a lot of problems with the mound being moved back.
Entering 1893, Weyhing had won at least 26 games in each of his first six seasons and was working on a streak of four straight 30-win seasons.
Weyhing walked a lot of batters even when he was going well, and after 1893, the walks stayed up while his strikeouts immediately decreased by half.

Gus Weyhing was a true pitching ace of his day.
Card looks great with a very tiny corner wrinkle, and an extremely small piece of a stamp hinge stuck to the front (on his pants, it is very hard to see).
Weyhing cards do not come up for sale very often.

Moreover, since hurlers weren't tied to a pitching rubber they could deliver after a several step start (like cricket).
With those advantages it wasn't uncommon for a 19th century Gus Weyhing to complete 53 of a season's 55 starts; not to do so would've cast aspersions on his manhood (Jim Brosnan bemoaned this nonfinishing stigma in 'The Long Season' in 1959!).
Therefore, relief pitching was a major league entry position like any other bench sub job.

The initial effect of the extended pitching distance was not to give a slight boost to batting averages, but to send them skyrocketing.
Pitchers Amos Rusie, Frank Killen, Kid Nichols, and Cy Young prospered with the rule changes in 1893, but Gus Weyhing, Scott Stratton, George Haddock, and Silver King suffered greatly.
King's favorite pitch was a sidearm-crossfire pitch that he could no longer use when the pitching box was replaced by a rubber.

I've been looking at this from a run average/league perspective, and I don't see anything in Whitney to lift him ahead of the likes of Larry Corcoran, Gus Weyhing, or Will White, and I would put Silver King and Tommy Bond ahead of that crowd.
