A last-ditch group of defenders attempting to march to Gush Etzion under cover of darkness are discovered and killed.
During the Jordanian occupation, all the buildings were destroyed and the thousands of trees planted in Gush Etzion were uprooted, save a very old one known as the "lone oak." For 19 years, the survivors would gather on the Israel-Jordan frontier and gaze at the tree in remembrance of what was[3].

The Etzion Bloc ("Gush Etzion" in Hebrew), which today consists of 18 communities and nearly 40,000 residents, is located between Jerusalem and Hebron.
Although the area was not granted to Israel under the 1947 partition plan, the commanders of the Haganah considered it an essential buffer against a southern attack on Jerusalem.

Kfar Etzion was a religious kibbutz founded in 1943, about 2 km east of the road between Jerusalem and Hebron.
In March a Jewish convoy from Jerusalem intended to supply the Etzion Bloc was ambushed and 15 soldiers of the Haganah died before the remainder were extricated by the British.
A total of 157 defenders died in the battle of Gush Etzion (Levi, 1986), including those killed in the massacre at Kfar Etzion.

Gush Etzion is a tract of denuded hills only 13 km.
It comprises Kfar Etzion, Migdal Oz and Rosh Zurim (which breed turkeys, produce candles and metal parts, and grow carnations), Moshav Elazar and the rural centre of Alon Shvut with its Har Etzion Yeshiva and apartments for young people who live here but work in Jerusalem and other nearby places.
A new town named Efrat is located on the eastern side of the Etzion Bloc across the main road, and further east, in the Judaean Desert, are the settlements of Tekoa and Ma'ale Amos.
